Picked up a brand new pistol yesterday, and cleaned and lubed it. When I got to the magazine, the cleaning patches became stained a reddish-brown color.
I examined the magazine very carefully, and saw no signs of rust. Drying off the magazine with dry patches showed less and less color (duh). Then tried using another cleaner (CLP) and the same thing happened. Again closely looked at the metal. Nothing. The metal is black, rather than stainless. I'm stumped, but I currently know little of metal & rust, so it could have a common explanation that I simply haven't yet encountered. Any thoughts?

Graphite maybe. They use that on locks to lubricate them.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

You may be wiping off a protective coating, such as red oxide oil (I may have the name of the oil wrong).

Interesting.
The manual it came with was minimal, to ssay the least. I'll work from that perspective and see how it goes. Thanks!

It's commonly used on guns and magazine, especially military weapons. It can be a bear to get off depending on how long it's been on the magazine. I'm sure a quick search will turn up some tips for removing it. It's basically a grease with some wax in it so often a solvent or heat is used to remove it completely. If you do remove it completely make sure to come back and coat everything with a good oil. Or you'll rust in no time.

Gasoline cuts cosmoline and makes the job much easier. Try soaking in gasoline.

I certainly don't mind leaving it on - guess I would cleaning more lightly, then oiling it. Very glad to know what it might be.
Appreciate the thoughts!

What kind of pistol is it? By that I mean the make and where it was manufactured.

I was not familiar with this pistol. Looked up some info on it. Seems like a quality firearm and looks great.
Reason for asking where mfg. was because sometimes firearms coming from overseas are sometimes packaged with cosmoline or something very much like it and I thought that might be what you experienced. Again a nice pistol. I am going to look around for one locally and see how it feels in the hand.

I've shot a couple of the CZ-USA shotguns and they are pretty nice, especially for the price. I've been thinking of getting one for my girlfriend. |

If you shoot a round from a rusty gun. Would you get a rusty bullet hole?

Don't remember saying it was going to be a Valentines gift. We've just been looking for a shotgun for her so she can shoot some trap or 5 stand.
