Joshua Jay's Unreal:
This set is completely fantastic. I'm usually weary of buying a set as expensive as the EMC ones but I have never been let down. I actually own about 95% of everything Josh has published and I've been a big fan for almost a decade. When I was UNREAL was coming out, I knew I had to pick it up. I'll try and skip most things that have been mentioned out there. You can find most within that ad copy etc, so I'll spare you of that. EMC is an awesome production company and quality is amazing. I love magic… And I love learning new magic. I'm a person who spends a TON of time learning new magic, reading books, watching DVDs, YouTube performances etc. I also own a few of the other EMC box sets which are proudly displayed on my bookshelf. Josh's DVD will be put with the items I reach for the most, a fairly small section that really inspires the way I think. Basically, this small section on my shelf is a reminder of my heroes within magic and how I would like to be seen and admired some day. Jim Rohn once mentioned "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." and that is how I treat this small section. You begin the set with Josh's stage show which he describes in full detail. You can be a person who checks out the tricks but what really sets this DVD apart from others is how personal Josh is with picking the material he performs and the premise he selects. Hearing him discuss this is not only important but it's one of those things were "it clicks" and you find out the REALLY good stuff… The real secrets to how magic works and how to approach a performance. The second disk is primarily parlor style magic which is performed within a coffee shop. These tricks are fantastic and really powerful but again, watching the interactions and the performances are really what make this DVD set worth every penny. Sherlock is something out of this world and really fantastic, Inferno is explained in full detail (how to even make everything yourself), coins to glass and a surprising piece… Trash to Treasure which is Josh's take on Wild Coin. The third disk is close-up and displayed a really nice routine using both Prism and Phantom decks. It's a FULL routine that could easily set someone apart as a professional entertainer. It's smooth, well constructed and not difficult. The benefit? How far ahead you are from everyone else! Josh also updated his Blind Man's Bluff routine which REALLY caught me off guard knowing the previous versions. The last disk focused on individual routines which are all great… Some of them are close-up show pieces and could really play nicely in a larger group such as Diamond Cut. There is also a section on this DVD with EXTENSIVE work on the Bluff Shift which are really great, if you are unfamiliar with the move this would be a wonderful way to become acquainted… you will use some of the ideas here. Personally however, I think the best part of this DVD is the interview. I 100% think, this whole set was worth that alone. You really hear some of Josh's little tips which make a big difference in how you think about magic and how you will perform. There is even a section within the interview on how Josh keeps his notebook which is not only smart but something I will probably employ soon. I cannot talk highly enough about the set and how much this has made clear for me. Josh is a wonderful, likable and smart performer who leaves no stone unturned. You cannot go wrong by picking this up. -------------------- We, within the magic industry, are in a rough spot… We buy methods but so rarely find advice on how to perform properly, how to think and respect magic. This, along with the other EMC products, are a big step forward. Thanks Joshua Jay for releasing some amazing work. I'm proud to have this on my shelf. |

That's great, its on its way to me now via Penguin.
I only have the Dani Da Ortiz one, but I am sure this will be even better. Cant wait to see it. Plus I was fortunate enough at Magic Live 2011 to see his UNREAL show, and it was great. Cant wait to dive in Alex

I think I could really dive into this at my Deployed area. Wish it was available as a stream since it takes a bit for anything to get to me. Still waiting on something from December.

I am wondering that Josh mentioned a gimmick called "small commercial" and thin card from card shark in this set, does anybody have idea about where can I find them?
Thanks in advance Sonic |

I had asked Sonic to contact me via PM to avoid any exposure, but I've edited my response to post here for anyone else looking for the same information.
The thin cards are called "Double-Deckers". Card Shark produces them in the Phoenix back design. They are available from many dealers including http://www.card-shark.de/ and www.vanishingincmagic.com . The gimmick is mentioned in the "Around the World" routine and anyone who has watched the explanation would know which gimmick is being referred to. The gimmick itself is not called small commercial, Joshua is just saying that he is giving a small commercial for the creator of that gimmick, Bob Swadling. It looks like this gimmick is something that Bob sold in the past, but I can not find recent references to where to find it. You may be able to make one yourself if you're familiar with making gimmick cards or can try to find Bob's contact info, someone on the Café may have it available. Sorry I couldn't provide more details on finding the exact gimmick. Thanks, Tom |
