I haven't done much with coin magic in a quite a while, as is about to become very apparent...
How do you deal with the fact that if you borrow a quarter from the audience, it's likely to be a state commemorative quarter and it might not match the quarter you have? For instance, years ago I used to perform John Bannon's effect where you put a quarter inside a glass makeup bottle, and the spectator could actually get a pretty close look at it, especially when you extract it from the bottle. Sorry if this is a dumb question... |

Don't borrow the coin.
If you were going to do a trick with a half dollar, how many folks do you think would be able to produce one?

Interesting! The fact is so few people carry around loose change anyway.

It depends on the effect. In many cases you can work things so that only the heads side is shown until you can swap back the borrowed coin.

You will also find most "newer gaffs" are made with State Quarter "Heads" (so it will match most in the case of a [ ) but even a [/ narrows you down to one specific State Quarter. What I do is "mine" quarter rolls to match my gaffs. My Triception set is made in Arizona so I went through several rolls of quarters and pulled out about 6 of them (re-rolled and used or took back to bank). This is one way to do it if you have the same OCD that says the dates much match on all your coins / gaffs too. For the most part, I never cared that the dates matched but a few gaffs and the effects that play with them, the "type coin" (state or old quarter) does make a difference especially if there is a lot of "show" to the coin. "like Bagged 4 Life" they stare at 2 coins in a baggie - they would remember it was a state quarter (or regular, depending on what you use) but not necessarily "which state" (mine is a Lassen KY State Quarter and I mined a few extras I carry together for a switch out). But, and probably most importantly, I have noticed through the many rolls I have gone through looking for certain coins, there are probably an equal number of each kind (state vs old style) overall. I have even found a silver 1932 quarter in one (so I imagine they will both be around for a long time and now they are printing Parks and Landmarks instead of states).
I guess the simple answer is - have all your own coins (esp. for gaffed effects) in case you (A) need to match them or (B) can't borrow the "coins you need". I only borrow coins to do non-gaffed effects, If, they offer up the right coins (say 4 state quarters) I will add my gaff into play and do Imagination coins with their coins, but I only ask to borrow leading into a simple impromptu effect (wing it from there - or return their coins, use another effect or time misdirection and pull out your coins to continue).

Jason Wethington has the best solution to this problem. I believe it's on his "Tied" DVD. It's not mine to openly share but, he is a member here. Also I THINK at one time he actually posted his method here on the Café.

If you're performing Cig-though-coin,coin in bottle or any coin trick really that you can borrow the coins it is always best to do so. its too bad hald dollars and silver dollars aren't in common use these days.

Interesting question. Two suggestions. First is you might want to ask to borrow a state/nonstate quarter, depending on the gaff need, using a they have the properties required. Second is if the person has a few coins in their hand reach in and take a quarter before it is identified and switch it in. Just a thought.

Proper storytelling, audience management and execution of a great effect has nothing to do if you borrow or use your own coins (cards, rubber bands ....) it can help the spec to dispel the disbelief that a " fake magic coin " was used but there are many ways around that. Using your own coins also assures you that you have the proper amount of coins needed and even that the coins you use "fit" properly in the gaff you will eventually wring in. Some coins are tight or dirty/sticky enough to trip you up. I often borrow then switch them out for my own (if I really feel borrowed coins make a difference in that particular case) .

If you're doing an effect that uses a QB or similar thing, the state quarters could actually add something to the presentation ... once you've looked at the borrowed quarter & said "Oh hey, 'Colorful Colorado', haven't seen one of those for a while" (for example) you really won't need any further convincers.

How about having your audience helper initial a round sticker (that coincidentally is about the same size as a quarter) and you initial a sticker for the other side.
You can switch the "real" coin for your dupe with your initialed sticker side showing. If the sticker you use does cover the quarter completely your dupe coin can have your initialed sticker on both sides. Julie |
