Hey Guys,
I've got a general question on Clad Kennedy expanded S***ls, which occured when I received my package from Roy Kueppers. My order contained 2 Clad Kennedy Shells. The are made from a 1971 Kennedy and a 1974 Kennedy. BTW I'am quite unhappy about their quality. The coverage is quite bad. But my main problem is: The Shell fits perfectly on every Kennedy head half dollar from 1971 to 1986. 1986 is the latest I own, beside my 2014 Kennedys. Unfortunately the shell doesn't fit on any of my 2014 Kennedys! Is that normal? Are the early Kennedys smaller? If so, how can I know if any ordered Kennedy Shell will fit my halfs? No manyfacturer/craftman does advertise the year the of the Kennedy half dollar the shell is made from! Does anybody know the year when they increased the size of the Kennedy head half dollar? Many thanks in advance! Nightcrawler |

Nightcrawler,
The US mint never changed the size of the half dollar. What is probably going on here is the shell was made to fit a 'worn' coin. The opposite is true too. If you have a brand new shell made to fit 2014 halves then putting it on an older 1974 coin will be a really loose fit. Either way is not good. This is probably one of the reasons some of the top coin makers sell matched sets with the shells. Although its more expensive you're guaranteed a fit. |

I also have several shells from Roy Kueppers, they are of good quality and yes, they don't fit the 2014 kennedies. The coins Roy sent me with the shells provide a good fit though.

My Johnson Shell won't fit coins with very good milling, while my Tango does, but provides a much looser coverage of the coin.
The shell got stuck just last night as I had a coin in my pocket that I don't usually. It got stuck on the third phase of Roth's coins across! Fortunately I knew an ungimmicked ending! I'd personally rather have the tight fit and it not work on all coins. It isn't like we are borrowing any half dollars |

RK's work leaves little to be desired with the quality of his coins.
They are mass produced in large quantities and quite messy when it comes to tolarences. I wasn't impressed with his work after spending over $100 on several different sets from him. Tango is just as bad. I saved and went with Todd since his work is of Exceptional Quality, plus he's here in CO. |
