Does anyone have any experience with this illusion "THIS IS HEAVY" by JAY MATTIOLI? It looks good but I am wondering if it is really worth $900.00

I do not know exactly the way his magic worked. But I have one "Light and Heavy" illusion built by Thom Rubino from Las Vegas. And his take on it was brilliant.
A very well known magic consultant saw Thom's design and went, "You MUST patent this!" I would love to see how Jay's one worked. Jay's stuff are very good and he is very clever. I have his Sandz and I love it! |

I purchased this a month ago and used it for the first time last Wednesday for the entire 5th grade classes at an elementary school. I was extremely pleased with the total ease of operation AND the entertainment value.
It does not come with a carry case but I went to a discount store and purchased a cheap large rolling suitcase to transport it in. The stool is very high quality. I weigh 175 and have worked out with weights all my life and I myself, could not lift the box off. I highly recommend this. It's not going into my birthday shows but perfect for those larger family events and stage shows. You COULD lug it into a b day party but I wouldn't recommend it. Tommy

TommyJ, how many times do you let the kid lift the box? I was thinking of placing a $100 bill inside instead of the silk handkerchief. Or maybe, some other object.

A feather is also a good suggestion but I would rather place something a bit heavy so as to disguise the original weight of the box with the gimmick. But to the audience point of view, it is an empty box.
As long as the box is not lifted by twisting, pushing or pulling, you are safe by telling them to lift upwards ONLY! And ONLY held by the sides of the box and NOT the corners. I am planning to make a 3 feet circular disc for this for the sake of portability. I find the ladder a bit bulky to bring.

The whole point of the ladder is to do away with the awkward large disc!
Jay has taken this awesome trick and made it completely portable and practical. it looks normal where as a giant disc is not normal or practical. Tommy glad to hear you like it. I have plans to get this in the future. sam

A few questions, if Tommy or Lou happen to see this:
Is this version pretty much geared to kids? Or adults too? Can adults balance on the ladder? In the demo video, it looks sort of kid-size. Does it seem like too much "stage instruction" is needed to keep the participant from being able to lift the box? (No pushing, no pulling, no twisting, do not hold by the corners, lift straight up only.) Tommy, why do you feel it's not suitable for birthday parties but better for "larger family events and stage shows"? I love the ladder, which solves the problem of needing an odd disk or a certain kind of floor, etc. Thanks for any insights! Jerry |

You guys all bring up great points. I have always been so fascinated with this trick and I really like the ladder as well. This disk I think could be good if it had some foot prints on it to mark where you stand. But I could see how it is awkward to bring in and set up. If you were on a raised stage and no one could see it, then you could leave it there the whole show. I guess my only worry about the ladder is stability and how safe is it when you have someone jerking it. But the main thing preventing me from getting one would be a proper ending. Some routines I have seen were just a bit flat and there was no real ending. Any of you who have done it, do you all have a clear "big finish".

So, can anybody answer those earlier questions:
Is this version pretty much geared to kids? Or adults too? Can adults balance on the ladder? Does it seem like too much "stage instruction" is needed? Thanks to anybody who's got this (or the creator) for filling in the blanks. Cheers, Jerry |

Hey Jerry,
I have used it in practically all of my show types including kids birthday shows, school shows and in adult mentalism shows. It is a bit of a pain to "lug" around but for me its all about the "Wow factor" vs the effort. ( I'm also fortunate enough to have an assistant carry, and set up my show.) So from about 100 shows now in using it so far and to answer your questions: 1. Yes it plays great to kids and adults- you just need to get the right routine obviously. 2. Weight factor. It will hold up to 200 pounds- but I try to get someone less than that. Ideally the best reactions I get is in my family shows when I get an adult and child to assist. Great laughs when the kid lifts the box but the adult can't:) 3 Stage instruction: You do need to be crystal clear with your instructions, like almost in any effect. There is some common sense "spectator management" that comes into play. ie. when you instruct them to lift the box, you ask them to lift with their knees and not with their back- this gives the right posture. I also tell the audience that when the box is lifted straight up its' an applause cue and it gets great energy from the audience. Lastly just want to make mention that I have never had some one able to lift the box -in this sense it is very reliable. Hope this helps:) |

Just purchased one of these used here on the Café. Great Trick. This thing is built like a tank. The best light heavy chest on the market today. Completely hands off. I have purchased a lot of magic over the years been disappointed before but not with this.
This thing is completely hands off. It really sells the illusion. I have been questioned before with other light heavy chest I own why the mag has to touch the box durning performance. For larger adults have them put one foot on the step problem solved. I can't pick up the box and I'm 5'-11" 210lbs. This was well worth the investment. RD |

I guess a concern of mine is that you will need to really direct the audience member well...
If you don't tell them to put there foot or feet on the bottom of the ladder, couldn't you just lift up the whole ladder and box all in one piece? How heavy is the ladder... |
|||||||||
RyanDicharry New user 53 Posts |
It's really heavy. If your spec tries to lift the box as directed their hands will slip up the box before the ladder can be lifted. That's the beauty of this trick. Load a small cardboard box with some heavy objects and try to pick it up by the sides alone. Usually you will have to tilt the box and get a hand under it to pick it up if not your hands will slip.
Even if someone grips the box by the corners it's still hard to lift. Not saying it can't be done but you will have enough time to intervene before they can lift it up. Remember cardboard boxes are slippery in nature. Do not worry yourself with the audience mgt too much. As with most effects there is some needed but it does not feel like your overbearing. About putting a foot on the stool, it's human nature to do that to get more lifting power. RD |
