As a long time hobbyist, I'm stunned that I've never known about this gimmick until very recently. It was a eureka moment. I flashed back to a few particular sponge ball routines that completely fooled me. It all makes sense now. A collective thanks to all who gave advice in this thread. Now I'm going to go and trim my own Sanada, lol.

With respect to the brightness I use matte varnish spray and is perfect

I had one shatter in my pocket, at a recent gig. I just bought some more and now I store them in an improvised humidor, to keep the moisture level high, so they won't be so fragile. Be careful what you keep in the same pocket!
