I found this sleeve pull on Owens Magic site.
http://www.owenmagic.com/New_Items/new_items.html Has anyone ever used one like this and does anyone know where else I could find one similar. It is quite expensive ($1250.00) and I was wondering if I could find it or one like it cheaper anywhere else. I apologize if I am not allowed to ask this type of question.....Thanks for any help. |

It's not really a pull... it is a "take up pull" primarily used for vanishing birdcage.
It is an owen remake of a Hammerton, which was a remake of the Debiere pull made by Jon Martin of England. It allows free movement, but when you do that something, it "takes up slack" and shortens so you can do the vanish by straightening your arms. Find a used Jack Miller Holdout, less than $40 and you can creat miracles.

Bry1513,
Currently there is only Owen's. James P. Riser did have one but he sold all his, it use to be pictured on his site, but I cannot find it now. It was along the Tommy Wonder design, it still cost what Owen's was asking for. These can be only purchased from collectors and you would pay more than Owens's is asking. These are custom equipment and very hard to find. The late George Kirkendall also made one at one time. If you find one let me know I have been looking for one for years. Whenever I find one they are always gone by the time I contact them. If you don't get the Owen's it will only increase in price. I bought a Owen's Cage back in the 1970's for $60.00 now look at the price. Bill |

Couldn't you just buy the vanishing bird cage? It would save a whole lot of your money!

Remember, the only thing this device does is "take up slace" that is all it does.

I have the cheapest and best vanishing birdcage pull in the world.
What is so good is that moments after the vanish, you could be strip searched and the cage is gone. It is no longer on you. No moving parts. Make it yourself. I spent 20 years with every kind of pull/cage imaginable until I hit on this. Interested? Email me at petebiro@aol.com I also have, in my collection, a pull system that goes down the front of your trousers and down a pants leg into a cloth bag/holder.

I have the plans for the leg pull device that Linden Herverly gave Horace Marshall year ago in the files. It was designed to allow the coat to be taken off.
It looks ok but why bother? Yes, the simple pull is the best. Bert Allerton's pull probably cost him all of 15 cents. Today, that might even reach two dollars. The Debierre pull is good in that it does allow the cage to be done in the middle of the act. Billy McComb came up with several improvements on it which I later undertand were appropriated by Ken Brooke. I have Ken Brooke model. The Owen's model is virtually identical and I think runs $350. It is on their website I believe.

Richard,
I think you forgot a figure; they are 4 figure prices now, not 3. Just recieved the McComb Slow Motion Vanishing Bird Cage DVD today from Stevens Magic. There is a round table discussion on the bird cages of types that is interesting. I think the close-up shots could have been inserted on the clips and hooks for the cages, and the fine points of the different cages that were discussed. The DVD does not rehash Tommy Wonders; he is mostly an observer in the discussions. The DVD only covers Billy McCombs version on how to vanish the cage, his equipment, hook-up, and routine. So unless you have a Billy McComb cage the DVD does not really help a lot on using other types of cages except on how to initiate the vanish. Johnny Thompson does not perform the trick either. I have determined that I have been doing the vanish correctly all these years. It was just my jacket cut in the armpit area, and the size of the Owen's Cage; it is really for a person over 6' tall or with very long arms. The DVD are labeled wrong. What should be DVD 1 is really the material on 2, and visa versa. |
