I would suggest the royal road to card magic. There are a lot of good tricks explained in there but most importantly you will also learn all of the most important card sleights.
By failing to prepare, we are preparing to fail.

Can you control a card, slop shuffle, riffle shuffle, palm a card, double lift, these are really the only moves I use.
there is really no reason to need more...ie...chops it's like Harry Lorayne says there's really only 3 moves needed to do Great Magic, a good control, a decent DL, and palming a card. you know what...he's right. another note, go to the workers section, you'll get better reaction/help over there, a strange mix of cardists. |

A very cool and easy trick to learn and perform is "neither blind nor stupid" by the genius Juan Tamariz. It requires no skills at all and it hasn´t got any sleight of hand. Here you have the link with the performance by Tamariz itself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hFBn6y9q-iQ

Harry Lorayne's 'The Magic Book' is unreservedly recommended.
It will not only give you all that you need to know starting out with card magic - but it will teach you other things such as magic with coins and other everyday items. The bulk of the book however is cards; it will take you through ALL of the necessary tools that you need - with Harry's excellent conversational style of teaching via the written word. No ambiguities - no confusion - it's as if he's sitting next to you taking you through what needs to be done. Most importantly, it will give you enough material, powerful and solid magic, to last you a lifetime. I started out in 1977 as a 13 year-old kid with this book - it had just been published. I still read it and perform tricks from within its pages. It has not only been my inspiration but it's also given me a living for many, many years. I cannot stress enough the importance of this book to someone new starting out. So many books contain pipe dreams; this contains material to give you a reputation. To reiterate, read this book and it's all you'll basically ever need to know to become a proficient magical entertainer. You can buy it from Harry direct - see: http://www.harryloraynemagic.com/the-magic-book.html

Thanks for the nice words, Barry.
Incidentally, I believe that Juan's effect mentioned above was first published in the States (or perhaps anywhere) decades ago, in APOCALYPSE, titled Blown Away. (I do it as a completely impromptu thing which I'll publish in a book of "only my" contributions to APOCALYPSE over the twenty years - if I ever get around to it (it will have to be after another book I'm working on now).
