I just received the new Psychic Chess 2.0 from Brian Watson. I was attracted to the quality and size of the props and the theme, which has always been a firm favourite for me. Brian's customer service is brilliant. The product shipped when it was supposed to, and it arrived promptly. You get nicely printed and durable plastic cards, which are thin and together stack to a thickness of about 1.5 credit cards. You get a prediction card and six chess piece cards, one for each of a Bishop, Knight, King, Pawn, Queen and Rook. You also get a great DVD with everything you need to know on it.
The effect involves the performer dealing the cards on the table and a participant moving an object over the cards several times as the performer eliminates the cards sight unseen. The participant is left with one card, which matches the prediction. They can start at any card and the performer knows not only which cards to eliminate but also ends the elimination with a perfect match of the prediction. The principles involved are well known, but Brian has created the props in such a way to make this really straightforward to perform. For those of you who like physical props (perhaps even aged ones), the routine and method can easily be used in that way. If, on the other hand, you want something to carry with you at all times, it fits neatly in your wallet and is ready to perform straightaway. http://www.cupsandballsmagic.com/Psychic-Chess-2.0.html Highly recommended. |

I like the look of this and Todd's recommendation is enough for me but is anyone else having problems activating the 'Here's a "no Frills" live demo!' and the 'UK and Europe' price and purchase icons on the website?

Well, Psychic Chess looks very worth using in some of my closeup performances, and I like the Chess premise, so I joined the stampede early and bought it. I had no trouble paying for it via PayPal. I watched a video on Brian's website, but it was just a promo; it did not show a performance of the effect.

He has a performance video there as well I believe...I love the idea that you can carry this one anywhere and use the same method with chess pieces....it links so well with other chess routines like Chess Match from www.trickshop.com and/or The Knight's Tour.....
Here's a direct link to a performance video http://youtu.be/0D8Yrz2n530 |

This is a very good have-it-with-you-all-the-time effect. From several performances, two thoughts come to mind:
1. Be as sure as possible to choose a participant who can follow directions! 2. The performer may need to add one instruction to the directions in demonstrating the procedure. When you take one of the chess pieces, this can leave a gap between one piece and another. When the spectator next counts off (say) five moves, she MAY count the empty space left by a departed piece. So I will be adding to the directions and demo to "close the ranks" when a piece leaves the line. I'd appreciate any reflection the rest of you have from performing it so far. And if I have misunderstood something, please protect me from further folly! George |

Yes wanderwizard, it's like that every time (which does mean that you wouldn't really want to repeat it obviously.)
Thank you very much LOTH! Doing that with gigantic chess pieces would be amazing! I have seen some at amusement parks etc, it would play very well... Now I wish I'd thought of it for the trailer! George, thanks for you input, I agree with point 1, as with any mentalism type of effect, it's always important to choose someone who can follow instructions. However, your comment number 2, is incorrect. There are never any gaps EVER. That instruction. Nobody will EVER count an empty gap because there never will be one. :) Bri |

Thanks, Bri:
The one time it failed for me, then, was due to point one rather than two! George |

As you are already aware Slim with your communication with Todd, your effect is different, has a different method and mine was published 10 years before you state you started performing yours. I will not address this any more as it was already dealt with via email.

The effect I heard was a silver coin and four copper coins. Brian's routine is five chess pieces. David's routine is a position swap routine with a final revelation, Brian's is an elimination routine with a matching prediction. Both use math (psychically, of course!)...Brian's was published in 1995 and David has been doing his since 2005. These appear sufficiently different in provenance and effect to not warrant a credit in the way suggested above. I have emailed both Brian and David, so hopefully this will be settled. I think both routines are different and both are brilliant.

Do you have a link to that? .... I will am totally in the wrong if you released this 20 years ago! In my version the volunteers make the moves and choose secret numbers so I don't know how many moves they have made. Does yours do this? Of course I don't want you to expose anything about your effect. I'll be the first to admit I was amiss once I chase down the release. My bad.

Thank you Slim. I'll PM you regarding the earlier publishing of this (yes it was 1995.)
In mine the moves are not secret numbers no, they are given by the performer. I'll PM you also about the math principle that differes between your and mine also as I don't want to expose either here.... Bri |
