I would appreciate some objective (and non-objective) comments on Ken Weber's latest book, Maximum Entertainment.
I have read the published reviews and they have been excellent. Also, can the learnings gained from this book be easily integrated into the performance of close-up mentalism?

The answer is YES, absolutely. It matters not what type of mentalism/ magic you do, you'll find excellent advice and direction in this great book.

Anyone know of a good source for this book?It seems to be in limited distribution, as I haven't been able to locate a copy at my typical dealers. (Hank Lee, etc.)

The real beauty of this book is in the misdirection tips and advice. However, I do use some things from this book but not all. If you do get it, you will learn some things whether it be the tricks or misdirection.

Are some of you confusing KEN Weber with Michael Weber?
Max, this is not Ken's latest book; it's his first book. And the information in this book can be applied to all performing situations. Badger, there are no tricks or discussions of misdirection in this book; there are, however, secrets that will make you a better performer. This book is about stagecraft, communicating with your audience, and making your magic/mentalism as memorable as possible. "Maximum Entertainment" is more valuable than any other 5 magic books you will buy. Bob Baker Disclaimer: wrote the foreword, but no financial interest. |

Max,
Maximum Entertainment is not available as an e-book. However, you can get the printed book from Guy Bavli's ProMagic. Check his web site. Bob |

I purchased this book over the weekend and have read about 75% of it since then. Simply a great book that teaches you how to be your own director and make your shows/magic/mentalism better. What I like most about this book is Mr. Weber's use of known magicians or mentalists to make his point easier to grasp (for me at least).
I recently did my first show for an audience which didn't include mostly family and friends. Fortunately, I had the show taped and look forward to applying Mr. Weber's points to the tape to see what areas I need to improve upon as well as what I did well in the show. Highly recommended. |

Just my opinion but I believe this book is everything Strong magic wanted to be but isn't. I am only about half way through my first reading of this book but it seems to have some great real world applications. So far the book has been much more than what I anticipated.

I also think that this is an outstanding contribution. I have many books on magic theory that contain statements like - be a better magician and think about your magic - but do not tell you how to do this in practical terms. "Maximum Entertainment" by Ken Weber instructs and gives real insight on how to become a better magical entertainer.

I've read the book, and it would be great if Ken Weber wrote a sequel deconstructing more people's acts. It would be so interesting to read more of his ideas in practice.

I have recently ordered this book and am greatly anticipating its arrival.
That said, I have a concern about it. Call me crazy (YOU'RE CRAZY!), but it seems premature to be rating a book like this so early on its practicality. It seems to me something like this can only be proven after testing. I don't know how many times I've read something that is the most beautiful idea and SEEMS at the reading like it is totally thought out, etc., when in practice it does not work as written. People are very easily moved (inspired?) into believing in an idea when the idea is really just a myth or a poet's truth. I hope the idea of Maximum Entertainment is the truth of it.

After reading the book and viewing the DVD of my performance I found much that I could apply to my performance. The book offers practical advise from a director's point of view (in fact the whole premise of the book is to become your own director) that can only make your show better. Since I have no experience in acting or directing or voice lessons the book was very useful to me. Mr. Weber's own experience and his use of examples of current performers helps illustrate his points. The book was an easy read and I would like to see your thoughts about it once you have had a chance to read it. |

I see your point, Decker, but I have a slightly different perspective. I think a book can be considered "good" if it's well-written, provides some immediate value, is well-produced, and recognizes its place in history. (That is, has proper crediting, etc.)
So by that measure, it seems like this book might be "good." (I haven't bought it yet myself.) As you said, the real value is its lasting impact. That takes a while to judge, and if Maximum Entertainment also provides this then it will move from being "good" to becoming "classic". Very few books (Strong Magic, for example) endure long enough to achieve this. It certainly is too early to claim this book is in that category. |

I will be the first to state that I know little. I am not qualified at judging the written word, but I will state that I firmly believe that in reference to Maximum Entertainment many will find that it is "well-written, provides some immediate value, is well-produced, and recognizes its place in history".
