Hi,
I did four strolling gigs last week and I really feel like I need something "more" in my reportoir. Everything goes over well and the reactions are great but I really need one or two routines that is something different than the other ones. I feel that my effects are somewhat similar. So this is what I usually do: ----------------- ACR ending in c2w A Trick Question (2 phase Dr Daleys last trick) Industrial Revelation Magicians Choice with five objects Card revelation on cell phone video Card to mouth Michael Amamrs little hand Phantom deck/omni pen Torched and restored TT bill switch -------------- I average on 3 effects pr group/table. As you can see I am fairly card "heavy". So, any advice/ideas on something that would expand my working reportoir? Any help is greatly appreciated? |

I got my mini-chop cup made by Eric Hansen. I love it!
Price was a lot cheaper than I thought it would be (also cheaper now due to lower Canadian dollar for US customers) http://www.magicnook.com/EricHansen/ChopCups.htm mine looks like the one on the right: http://s290.photobucket.com/user/sleight......jpg.html but I honestly don't think it makes too much of a difference which cup you end up getting. as long as it works properly, it's basically just the look of the cup. even cheap chop cups should work properly and still look good IMO. you can also just do a one cup routine and you can just use any cup you want. sometimes it's nice to do things without gimmicks. |

I don't understand what you mean by magician's choice. Do you just have 5 items and have them think of one, then reveal you had predicted it?
Consider more coin effects. Coins across is excellent and can be done for kids, adults, and people who don't speak English. It's usually my middle routine for strolling and then I will do a fake explanation...(The Little Hand.) Charming Chinese Challenge is also excellent. If you are averaging 3 per group, group those effects into openers, middles and closers. Card to impossible location and Chop cup are excellent closers for strolling. |

I may list tricks that you already do, or have been mentioned. But here is a list of every trick I do while strolling currently:
Set 1: One Coin Routine with Jumbo Coin Finale The Ambitious Card ending in CTW (using Real man's Wallet) Set 2: 3-Fly (A cross between Ponta the Smith's and Michael Vincent's, with finesse on certain moves that I have seen to be original to me) The Chicago Opener (I have my own presentation and plot changes, but I highly recommend Pop Haydn's Chicago Surprise. His is much better than mine, but I do my best not to directly copy people's work and his is hard to improve upon) The Color Changing Knives (Substituted with Chad Long's "Flash" as it has been mentioned here before) Set 3: Holy Moly (Jay Sankey's Washer trick. For a quick addition to your repertoire, you couldn't go wrong with this. It's extremely easy to do and it's a pretty hard hitting opener for me) Triumph (Your favorite version... I use to do an in the hand's version that I learned from J.C Wagner, but I recently began studying variations of the slop shuffle) Ring on String Routine (different parts of the routines are from different dvd's such as Diamond Jim's. I use Collateral to close that routine. It's extremely powerful) Then, I have stand alone effects/Routines for special occasions, or high tippers, some of which involve me taking a seat at the table or using a near by bar sort of surface. I don't often get to use the bar because I'm not over 21 yet. Card under Glass with a Triumphant Finale (My own which I don't care to share much details, but using the name, you can get an idea of how it goes. Doc Eason teaches a good Card under glass routine if you're interested in more bar magic) Coin Through the table. (my 1 coin routine, modified with lapping and a coin through the table. Mystery with three coins. (A Classic plot, I used Eugene Burger's Coin Clip.) Angle Z (I don't really do it that often, but it is a pretty strong effect) Fiber Optics based routine with ropes. (Using different parts of Richard Sander's dvd which is very modular, I've created what I feel to be an original routine. I've added a bit of personal finesse and I'm proud to present it even to magicians. |

Through basic equivoque the spectator chooses the prediction. I am surprised how well this routine plays. VERY easy but baffles people. Especially after acr or something very hands on/sleighty. |

Wow!
Thank you ALL for chiming in!! Some GREAT advice here! I have to say I am a bit surprised that so few mentions the sponge balls. Maybe that confirms my feeling that it isn't a must-do effect in walkaround. I feel awkward usint them balls! So to summarize; chop cup/one cup routine and coins is where it is at. That's actually what I suspected. Thank you all!! |

Anything with a borrowed item is good. Just be careful with how you use equivoque, especially in a strolling situation where you might have repeats. More laymen know the basics of it than you might think. Look into some of the work by Max Maven on this.
Also, if you are working a regular place I always recommend to have 1 or 2 special items in your bag that you only do for VIPs. For example, I always have Unshuffled, and a cup routine that I do not do for every table, but in my bag. This has really come in handy as I work in a state capitol and have often had local politicians and celebrities come in and then can do something special for them that no one else has seen. Excellent way to get booked by these type of people. Also....make sure have some material ready for birthday or anniversary celebrations. |

Thanks Pepka!
I remember reading that you use Scotty Yorkes routine for chop cup. Love that one! I have the Penguin Cups (http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/742) but I was thinking you might have a better suggestion for cup to use as a one cup routine? And what "coin set" would you recommend me starting with? Greatful for all help:) |
