Hello everyone
I am typing one handed right now because of an unfortunate foul against me in my soccer match Saturday night. I am extremely worried about not being able to practice my magic. I broke my radius and a tini piece chipped off my ulna. Has anyone had similar injuries? Will my wrist fully recover and allow me to have a full range of movement for magic? Any comfort in the fact I will be okay would be great! But please be honest. Thanks so much, Josh |

I have had ligaments in my wrist detached and reattached. I have had my shoulder totally replaced. Has not hampered my magic in the least. Just do EXACTLY as you are told to the letter.

What type of fracture? Displaced or non-displaced? Dominant or non-dominant hand?
If I recall correctly, you are about fifteen years old. At this age, if you are otherwise healthy and there are no complications, you should have zero problems with the healing process. I suffered a displaced fracture of the radius and ulna in my dominant left hand about ten years ago. I was forty-eight at the time of my injury. A few surgeries later and a titanium plate and screws holding everything together, all is well. And, I have a conversation piece with the scars! You will be fine...except for the smell when the cast is removed.

I broke my wrist (the Scafoid bone) many years ago whilst in the Army. Went to the Military doctor who told me it was nothing to worry about, and just work my way around it.
I was pretty young and ignorant at the time. Nowadays the bone in my wrist no longer exists, it has since crumbled away. The rest of my wrist is also now slowly crumbling away. Eventually I will be getting my wrist fused when the pain becomes too great to bear. I wouldn't worry too much about practicing magic right now, just make sure you wrist heals okay. Anyway I think magic is wide ranging enough to suit everyone. There is a one handed card magician who is amazing. His name escapes me. |

Everyone is different as well as the degree of the injuries.
Your doctor would probably give you the best information.

Just don't rush things and listen to your doctor. When you get out of the cast, your arm will be stiff and weak. Once you are out of your cast, your doctor will give you some exercises to increase your strength and mobility. This will come slowly, and you have no choice but to be patient here. My daughter broke her arm in September and was in a cast until December. 3 months later, she's at about 90% of her arm's full range of motion. Kids heal faster than adults. In my 30's, I had a surgery to repair a torn labram (shoulder injury). It took 6 months working with the physical therapist and another 6 months doing PT exercises at home to get back to normal. She's 6. I was in my 30's. Hopefully your recovery period will be more closer to my daughter's than mine.
Right now is a good time to improve your other hand, especially if its not your dominant hand. |

I was working on a balcony when it collapsed. By the grace of God the only injury I suffered were broken ring and pinky fingers as they got caught in the railing as I went down (firefighters who responded told me to go buy a lottery ticket).
The fingers healed and I have full range of motion. But they are twisted and I'll never do a convincing card palm again. If you have any limitations you'll learn how to adapt. If you're interested check out Scott Guinn's works. He was known as "the palms of putty". His works focus on showmanship and presentation.

Sorry to hear of your INcident.
Just about everyone who has had a similar type of injury has "checked in", and they all have positive thoughts. Look on the bright side. You'll be able to do a little extra reading of books on presentation! As Kabbalah has noted, due to your youth, you will probably heal fairly quickly. Take up chess--it's a lot safer! Best wishes! O

A perfect opportunity to practice your slights with the opposite hand.
Studies at a major university have shown that people with a broken leg, in a cast, who use their good leg on a stationary bike - not only recover faster but they improve their coordination. Learning to do all your slights with both hands makes you better all around as well as the connections it makes in your Synapse. When your tainted hand heals, you can switch-off depending if you have a viewer at a bad angle or just for fun as a personal challenge.

I didn't know if you were up to reading some humor to try and cheer you up, but after reading bucky's response I'll chime in and say that it would be a great time to work on "candle through the cast."
Kidding aside, I'm sure you'll be fine! You may be stiff and sore for a while, but if you do as the doctors say, especially when it comes to the rehab part, you should be good to go. I'm assuming you're young. I broke a foot playing basketball once and still have a screw and some wires in it to this day. I can hike, run and do a pretty decent second deal with that foot. My Downs palm needs work, but I think you get the idea. Heal fast Josh!

Josh,
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dai Vernon. He had a serious arm injury that did not heal correctly and turned out to be a 'pretty good' magician. Listen to your Doctor, do you physical therapy exercises, and continue to work on your magic (and soccer). Good luck, Hudson |

I had major wrist surgery last year and was off for a full six months! Now I'm back and better than ever!!
My advice: Do NOTHING with that hand until instructed by your doctor. DO NOT rush it. I didn't even lift a piece of paper for months! The damage you can do by not letting it heal properly far outweighs the cost of a few months off. Enjoy the rest and read a lot (holding the book in your other hand, of course)!
