What surface are you performing on?
is that what's making the noise? |

Hi!
Noise when loading from pocket. These are the cups and the balls I am experiencing with. Right now I am trying this out on a soft surface. But the noise is from when I am doing the load.. (Tried to post a pic from my phone..) |

Obvious answer is to not use billiard balls. Just find a soft ball that fits your cup. Tennis balls are great (you can get different sizes at some pet stores). Fruit is good too.

Yes unfortunately that may be the best option.

I don't have the book, but Paul Gertner must have overcome sound somehow.

Are you hearing it in practice or performance? More importantly is anyone else hearing it in performance?
In life there is so much ambient noise you would be shocked just how loud things can "talk" and nobody will hear. You are listening for it. NOBODY else is. It is not a big deal, don't make it a big deal.

Danny is right, ambient noise covers a lot more that you think.

Danny is right. I performed with a billiard ball and a steel juggling sphere as final loads and nobody notices. Ever.

Actually tried it on my neighbors and my family this morning. Surprisingly refreshing compared to a card trick:)
Nobody noticed the sound! Thanks! |

I would agree with others' comments regarding ambient noise; however, I could still hear the talking, which always made me nervous/less confident. My solution was simply to cover the billiard balls. It might sound silly but I used duct tape; there are hundreds of colors and patterns available. I usually finish the last load in the spectator's hand, so I didn't want to lose the size and weight of the billiard ball. Just my two cents.

How about some kind of lining in side of cups. Cork or felt with glue backing. Either cover whole cup or just some strips in right spots.

I haven't tried it but perhaps spraying the balls and the inside of the cup with clear rubberizing spray to cushion the talking.
I've used "PlastiDip" for other applications and it worked great.

Do the routine in a crowded restaurant or bar and no-one will hear the slight sound of your load -

The cup should be lowered onto the load...the load should not be placed into the cup with a kerplunk sound. The bottom of the cup does not need to be tilted toward the audience, if the cup is loaded with the rim below the table surface! The small finger of the loading hand should be under the load controlling it (the load) when the cup is put on the table.
Done properly, noise should not be an issue.

If I remember correctly, Tommy Wonder had a solution described in one of the books of wonder. Basically he had fake billiard balls with a lead inset, so that could still produce that typical sound, when he banged the two balls together.

Just remember that your practice environment is generally waaaaaaay different than your working environment (for better or for worse)! In this case, I find it's for the better. What sounds like a cannon shot in your living room often doesn't even register at a working gig with all the ambient noise.
