Here are three brilliant ideas...
1. Put some baking ingredients in, set fire to them and out comes a cake or some biscuits. 2. Put some electronic components in the bowl. Set fire to them. Put the lid on. A phone starts to ring, lift the lid. Hey Presto! There's the new Apple iPhone. 3. Take off your heavily soiled underwear and put them into the bowl with a bit of detergent and water. Hey presto! They come out clean and dry. Put them back on in front of your audience and enjoy the freshness.

The Dove Pan is one of those "never fooled me" props, like the Change Bag. I mean, what IS the Dove Pan? What's it supposed to be? It's "real" purpose. The Change Bag looks like it belongs in church. The Dove Pan suffers from not showing the lid at the start. I knew that as a kid!
One thing: I suggest you do NOT make doves appear/vanish with this thing. I could tell you a TERRIBLE story, about a friend's mishap with his doves, using a Dove Pan. Not here, though. Silks come to mind. The dirty laundry idea. Black, grey and brown silks go in, come out white! Use as part of a Flash production, paper flowers, etc... But I can think of MUCH better props to use. Even the Square Circle at least FOOLED me. The Dove Pan? Not so much... Doug |

Dump a mound of coins at end of a Miser's Dream into dove pan, flash of fire and change into a mound of Hershey's kisses. Throw them out to the folks.

Get the books on Dove Pan magic ideas. It has some good ideas in it. Sid Lorraine's is especially good. Look up Cracker Jack in it.

THE BALLOON PAN TRICK-
Here's one I used to do all the time on the fairgrounds. It works well for a full stage trick and 4-6 kids onstage and takes a goodly amount of fun time to do. Unfortunately it requires a low profile pan, not one of the Morrisay-style ones. I put this out in a small miniature 'compendium' years ago. I hope you can use it, it's fun to do. The effect is that 4 or 6 kids each magically blow up a balloon and then, by magic, make it into a balloon animal. The trick gives you an opportunity to use littler kids....there's not much for them to do but have fun. Preset: Take 2-each of about 6 different colored balloons, and make one small animal out of each color...small bunnies, mice, etc. Pack them into the pan in load position. It will be a tight fit, which will be to your advantage later. Show: A balloon blowing contest with 6 kids! They line up and you pass the bottoom tray along, they pick their favorite colored balloon. You set the tray aside. They start the blowiing up contest and of course they cant blow up squat. Make it funnier how ever you can. When you realize nobody can blow them up, stop the proceeding and ask if they'd like to blow them up by Magic...and even better, turn them into animals....all by magic. Teach them the magic blowing moves and the magic twisting moves. Have them practice. A few more laughs. Have them return the balloons to the pan, put on the lid and hold the lid down firmly with your finger on the top center. Have the kids do the blowing motions, then twisting motions, then throw the invisible balloons at the pan. Let up with your finger pressure and the lid will start to wobble and rise by itself, as you allow it. (This is why you're using the low-profile pan) This makes it look like the balloons are blowing up IN REAL TIME inside the pan. Lift the lid and the pan is jammed with balloon animals. Each kid's balloon is blown up by magic and is now an animal! Let the kids get their own color, and take a seat, you offer applause to the kids as they head back to the seats, and you end in applause position. The reveal is very colorful and magical, as the balloon overflow the pan and appear to be much bigger than could fit inside. I hope you can get some use out of this one, it's been fun to perform.

I ask the kids if they know how magicians make balloons ? then into the base put a squirt of shaving cream and a few other creams plus some confetti or hundred and thousands for colour, put the lid on and after some magic passes bingo; remove the lid and reveal a bunch of modelling balloons then onto balloon modelling.

I like the idea of the production item having a little bit of height out of the pan - like the cakes that are stacked. That seems a little more impressive than something that is laying flat below the ridge of the pan. Something expanding...

Only the low-profile lets that happen really well. I usually make the balloons so that I need to really press the load into place until it locks. Note that the balloons, when produced, have more volume than the pan WITH its lid on, too, because they've been squashed into place. The rabbit pump....I'd forgotten about that one. That's one they won't forget.

Put some 2 inch super soft sponge balls on a cardboard disk and then put the balloons on top then compress the cardboard down. When lid is off, they will pop up.

I had a leather pouch with "magic beads" I had several kids grab one or two, say a magic word and drop it in the pan, after a flash, using flash paper and hidden electronic ignighter, I covered the pan to, " Put out the fire" and when removing the lid, a giant almost never ending cascade of beads rolled out and in to a large clear bowl on the floor.
It's a stunning visual sight, but the sound is cool too. |

I have used the dove pan producing a dove for the last 20 years & the audience loves it !! it's a real crown pleaser ! In fact the dove pan looks like a room service cover for food we use these covers at the hotel I work at as a bartender .

Way back when I was doing pro-based magic, I placed a large paper coil in the load pan. Pour some lighter fluid in the base, light it, slam on the cover, remove the cover, look in, surprised, grasp the based with your hand, use your thumb against the edge of the coil and turn the base mouth down to the stage floor and start the coil with your other hand.
These were 5 inch coils, about 1/4 inch wide, and would unwind for 2-3 minutes. I would stop it occasionally and after getting frustrated that it just kept coming, I would hand it to my assistant who would stand aside and let it play out. I would try to start another effect, but kept turning to her to see he progress. When it did finally run out, I would show the base empty and she would go south with the pile of paper and the pan. Play this for laughs, ham it up. |

I love using the Dove Pan. I even use it for my Adult Shows and it gets a great reaction. I recommend getting a good one and having a good presentation. Since it is easy to perform, you can concentrate on the Patter and routine. This prop is only limited by your imagination.

I knew how most of the props worked when I was a kid watching a magic show...so did many of my friends. However, it was still a treat to see the magic performed by someone who was capable and confident enough to take "out of the ordinary props" and create fun and entertaining routines with them.
I know some might feel that a MAGIC SHOW is defined by an audience who leaves the venue convinced that they have witnessed real magic which used every day common items that they could all relate to. I get that. However, there is something to be said for those who can take the weird props and obviously gimmicked apparatus and keep an audience entertained ( and even mystified) , without endangering the publics perception of magic as being weird props and obviously gimmicked apparatus. |

I agree with the previous statement. Yes. Many Magicians use it. Like the colouring book. However, create a story and purpose with a good presentation and you will be surprised at the good reaction you can get. It is one of my favourite props to use in my shows.
