I agree. It's fundamental to our system of justice that the state must prove a defendant guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The defendant has a presumption of innocence and cannot be compelled to testify or make any statement at all.

Abandon that, and the first domino of the Bill of Rights will fall, followed quickly by the rest.

I suppose even if that foolproof Truth Machine could exist, it would cause bigger questions: Who's in charge of it, who's asking the questions and what good or bad laws on the books are we enforcing.

It does sound like a good plot device for a short story, tho.
