I tried to use a synonym (starting with the letter "J') in a message to someone and the Café converted the word into "!@#$%^&"
This is the name of an animal. It's not profanity. In fact, even the last half of the word (a three-letter word starting with "A") is also the name of an animal. This word even appears numerous times in the Bible. The Café's censorship algorithm may be in need of some adjustment if one can't even quote the Bible here. |

Simple answer... quoting the Bible goes against Café etiquette
Religion or Politics: Though we do have an area for discussing subjects other than magic, the discussing of Religion (other then a real application as it relates to a magical effect Example: Gospel Magic) is strictly Prohibited. The subject is simply too subjective, and more often then not leads to emotional responses and a lot of hurt feelings and/or resentment. Because the Café has a worldwide membership, Politics is another area that is best not tackled here. We are, after all, a magic website. The non-magic area is there for the discussion of lighter subjects, such as movies, best selling novels, etc. Postings that do not comply will be removed with no reason given. No exceptions!

Because you can't. And the reason you can't is general inability to be respectful with those words.

Café programming monitors words, not meanings. it is not possible to code words that can be used sometimes and not others. In your example of the word beginning with A, it isn't possible to code the word to be able to be used as an animal name being ok but not as profanity.
There are words that could be used instead of J...A...

Actually, it is VERY possible, Dave. It's just not worth the effort.

Frank, everything is possible but as you say it isn't worth the effort. By not possible, I meant that the present programming of the Café won't allow it. The tech folks have enough trouble trying to keep the important stuff running.

I recently posted a review wherein I was tried to disguise the word " f o r c e" by typing the first letter followed up with asterisks.
After it was posted, all occurrences of the word turned into: !@#$* I didn't catch it until later and I had to request one of the moderators to fix it. In the meantime people must have thought I was cursing a blue streak. |

Maybe a good idea would be to not try and get around the Café censor program. If you have to type asterisks then it might be better to find a different word or method of posting.

It was not a matter of getting around Café censor postings. It was an effort to conceal a word word/term that might expose method.

By getting around I mean the need to use asterisks. Obviously it isn't the word Force that caused you the problem since it posted just fine here. The problem is using the letter F and then asterisks. The programming makes the assumption that you are using profanity and changes everything.

OK if you want to quibble over symantics, instead of assume, how about the programming makes a logical determination about whether to change the word or let it run.
