Many of mine have already been named, but I would add "The Tenant," "The Omen," "The Sentinel," "The Phantom of the Opera" (silent version), and just when you thought I only watch movies with "The" in the title, I will add "Don't Look Now."

Here is my List:
* El Dia de la Bestia for the Bizzar Mood * Pi (not life of, but the Number Pi) for the occult touch and the divine number stuff * Funny Games for the sick psychology * A Touch of Spice for the story and the story telling * Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner for the realistic occult Magic and the story The first three where also the movies my wife got to impress me when we where not together. She did impress me. |

I was getting dissatisfied with the splatter stuff and started looking at the earlier films. Try "Cat People" (the original Val Lewton one, although Natassa Kinski looked good in the remake!). Using shadows and sounds and psychological manipulation and you get a very tense thriller.
Other earlier films: "M" with Peter Lorre as a child murderer. "Psycho" and "The Birds" were among Hitchcock's best "Them!" Sci-fi - but good pacing and that poor little girl screaming at the beginning... I would have loved to see "London after Midnight", alas the film remains lost. The still pictures look amazing. Give me suspense and anticipation, not the blood and limb flying around on the screen. That is the part of the essence of bizarre magic. |
