Hi all,
Does anyone know the name of the effect, played for comedy, where you put spectators hand in a box...insert 2 knives, and remove the "spectators" hand? This is used on a Mel Mellers video. Also, where it can be purchased? Thanks in advance. Shooz
With you in thought(s)

Mel Mellers uses insult remarks for his comedy, most of the laughs he gets is because he putting down a person. I that thought at 1st he was funny, until I analyzed his tricks with the patter he was using, and found that the trick has nothing to do with what he was saying.
So no one could actually use what he says as their own patter. That is why I never have purchased any of his DVDs. Therefore, I have no idea what you are referring to, can you post a picture taken off the video of the props? In the videos I have seen him on, the uses mostly standard magic props, maybe we can help you with a name for the prop, so you can find it more easily. A box is a pretty generic description, a show box, a donut box? Knives - butter knives, pocket knives, throwing knives? |

Thanks Ihop, that makes it more easily to name. The trick was invented by the late Magic Ian, it was ripped off by many magic manufacturers. He was selling it at the time of his death and had recently made a new batch according to a post he made back then.
It is called Dis-Armed, and Mak-Magic a wholesaler is supplying them currently in their model which looks like the on Mel Mellers was using. You can buy it here: http://www.abbottmagic.com/Dis-Armed-P0939.htm or your favorite magic dealer. It retails for $90.00 |

I think this is different than Dis-Armed. Dis-Armed has blades inserted and then the box is hinged open. It is done on yourself. The Mel Mellers effect is obviously very different. It is not Magic Ian's effect.

Actually, I don't think it is Dis-Armed, which hinges open and usually has the Magician cutting his own arm.
But you are right, Bill, Mellers does use Magic Ian's effect which is called a Little Slice of Hand. It is shown in greater detail (and Ian mentions Mellers's use of Ian's effect) here: http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=8 I don't know if or where Ian's effect is available today. |

As I said there has nothing been said about Ian's Magic being sold. So someone would have to track that information and hope it was saved.
Here is Magic Ian performing "A Little Slice Of Hand" the Illusionette: At Tannen's in 1988 performing "A Little Slice Of Hand" Illusionette: |

Thanks for all the additional info, Opus and Bill.
The Little Slice of hand is quite similar to an effect I made back in the early 1990s. Mine was quite different in that it was more an arm stretching with a length of flexible dryer hose over an assistant's arm. It was crude, but it worked. The method was pretty much the same as Ian's LSoH (the only way it really can be done), although I was never aware of his effect at the time. Ian's effect is different in that it is a complete separation. I used mine as gag interlude in combination with a head twister. Ian's trick looks great and in my opinion better than Dis-Armed.

Almost all Dis-Armed can not be shown all around 360 and that is the biggest weak point, I feel. There was however, this one clever person who came up with a version that could be shown solid all around which enhanced the performance
