I've been reading Amateur At The Kitchen Table http://www.thejerx.com/blog/2016/9/10/wrapped-up-in-books and I totally agree with his ideas about patter and presentation in non-formal performance situations. A great read!

Thanks for that link - just devoured a bunch of his blog posts surrounding the same themes: patter for the modern world; un-performing; casual magic; magic as a life hobby. Couldn't agree more on the idea of more magicians needing to step away from the long-held 'performance' role they've traditionally had – which has been beaten to death – and into an immersive 'storyteller' role where the magic is the moment.

I'm the World's worst consumer but I'm on the fence on buying that book.

What about you, Tyler? You seem to have a really non-performancey personality... What're your thoughts on magic for the modern, casual, stand-around audience?

I bought the book, scotchrocket, after reading Tyler's post. If you found the blog enjoyable and worth while, you'll probably find the book as well. It really articulates many of the issues I've been wrestling with as a social magician that aren't really dealt with in books or advice for and by the professional magician. I recommend Amateur at the Kitchen Table.

Oh hey sorry I slept on this thread fellas! Just saw the replies.
I think its worth buying for a few reason: 1. the info. 2. it's just a fun oddity as an object. Have mine on a small end table with some hacker/art/music zines and other similarly formatted oddities.. Also, it supports the author and his blog posts- which can be very funny and sometimes unpleasantly all-to-true..

My 2 cents: projecting the large showmanship style is appropriate for some cases like actual performance venues, street busking etc, and clearly closely-adhered-to patter can be great in many circumstances where its pre-scripted nature puts people at ease ie you're there as "part of the entertainment." Personally I attempt to embrace a more casual style because I get bored of saying the exact same thing, and I'm not a good actor.

Also, while I enjoy doing open mic sets and an occasional low key charity gig, I'm not a professional magician and so can afford to improvise and fail sometimes. It's come to sort of also be my "character" when I am doing an actual "show." But given that a lot of the stuff we do is just for friends, colleagues, each other, or YT videos, Amateur At The Kitchen Table definitely has some good advice to apply to these more nonchalant performance circumstances.

I've also tried to keep that same casual home-made and relatively unscripted feeling going throughout the channel- which I shall now shamelessly plug: https://www.youtube.com/c/coinmagicunderground (each sub gives a bicycle rider back angel its wings..)

Occasionally we've shot some stuff with decent cameras, and tried to do some unsual storytelling, but overall I've always seen it as being made with cel phones and that anyone can do the same. It makes me SUPER happy when people in different parts of the world use the tag #coinmagicunderground because I intentionally chose the name to be generic and non-copywritable!

My dream would be for it to grow beyond me after having started with my underground inspirations like Dill, Roth, Rubinstein, Gallo, Neighbors.. and new legends like Ponta and Ogawa.
It was always this buzzphrase when I was a teen. I'd get introduced to someone like Neighbors and someone would say "that guy's pretty well known in the coin magic underground."

I love the idea of this mythical place: If you've got a few coins in your pocket + some moves to practice + a camera you're there: The Coin Magic Underground!!

This is a stage performance featuring some coin stuff.
The magic is pretty silly in this one, but there's an interpretation of John Lovick's "Win a Date With Handsome Jack" (McCombical Prediction) but performed with different colored Mardi Gras coins instead of cards.
