Is any card at any number a good trick for laypeople? Check out the video for my thoughts.

I agree with you. I think with the right presentation and build up ACAAN can be a great trick for laymen. Its got a lot of inherent Drama. When I'm working with a Mem Deck and someone names 9 of hearts I always say name a number between 10 and 20. It's amazing how many times they say 17. If they do, and the deck is out of my hands from the beginning it always gets an amazing reaction. Name a card. Name a Number. Deal down its their. It's almost as if you are allowing them to order the Universe as they command. I'll just have the nine of hearts please at position 17 please. Boom. There you are. It's a cool effect and I think a participant can appreciate it. Build it up its a little miracle.

How about describing it as "The Trick That Fooled Houdini"?

Try saying to your spectators, "Give me a high number between 1 and 20" you should still get 17 or 18.

I talked about "17" in my routine Numero Uno DECADES ago - and more over the years when I re-did the routine, etc.

You can see me perform Numero Uno if you go to www.youtube.com/harrylorayneonvideo . Pay attention to how I ask for the number.

When I first saw Harry perform Numero Uno at a lecture years ago, it's safe to say he floored everyone.

Interesting, Tom. I originally taught Numero Uno in my lecture notes back in the 1980s. I re-wrote, up-dated it in LORAYNE: THE CLASSIC COLLECTION, Volume 3 five or six years ago, it's performed on one of my DVDs and on youtube - and I still "floor" magicians with it. Interesting. Laymen go without saying.

This is a debate that I've seen on the Café many times - and it's fascinating to hear people's insights. ACAAN is like any trick - it can be awesome with the right presentation. Because it is a 'magician's trick' (we all love it for it's impossibility) it needs more presentation, but it's still brilliant when done properly.

I am always fascinated with acaan plots. One of my lines to lay people is to say "where math and fate get mixed up by an accidental logic". This always gets their attention.
There is no better freedom than choice and no better choice than freedom.
