Yesterday I was in the bookstore at the school where I teach. A guy who looked to be early 20's was buying some form of a "Star Wars" tee-shirt. He told the cashier, "This is the coolest thing ever!"

It was a nice shirt, but I did not feel it warranted his response, so, I almost responded "You should try sex sometime." but I held my tongue.

But I wonder, have you ever come across what for you is "The coolest thing ever?" and what is that coolest thing for you?

Is it common for American high schools to have bookstores? How big is your school?

My high school is small by California standards, less than 400 students. But, we sit on a college campus. It was their bookstore.

Ah. That makes sense. How do you like the neighbours? Figure they're a positive or negative influence on your students?

Very positive. one third of my students graduate high school with an Associates (2 year) college degree. About one third finish their first year of college by high school graduation, and the last third still get the benefits of the facilities from the college. As a Physics teacher, I too get benefit from some of the college's lab equipment.

Well, that's pretty much the coolest thing ever!

I thought that it was universally established that the coolest thing ever was Snoopy.

With shades.

One of the coolest things I ever saw was a wolverine. I think I've told the story here before.

One of coolest things for me happened about 15 years ago. I helped organize a community service day at company I was working at. The day of the event I was with a team painting a school hallway when president if company came up and gave me his Leatherman (brand new) as a thank you.

Thought it was cool he'd do that. Also I think Leatherman tools are the coolest thing ever. You know Luke Skywalker (and Batman) have one in their utility belts...

The coolest thing ever for me was when I was born.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about? Smile

My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums.

The coolest things happened to me when I was on the road touring with rock bands ... but it's probably best if those details remain unspoken.

That's so cool...assuming you have a functioning parachute strapped onto your back.

Otherwise can't imagine it being much fun.

Yeah I didn't mention that little detail. No parachute would take all the fun out of it. Smile

You already provided my answer. Smile

I'm told it's even cooler when you're not alone.

Te coolest thing fro me was finally bringing my baby daughter home from the hospital after having to see her in an incubator every day for way too long (7 weeks premature)!

As for book stores in schools, we have always had them, John. They were not always formal structures, but every school I attended or worked at at least had a room or even a closet out of which they dispensed pencils, notebooks, and such. We always referred to them as "bookstores".
