Ohhh yeah!
This book rocks! I have had a few one offs from Matt... but this is quite the amazing compilation! Simple tech methods (where there are any physical tech) - major psychological actions as the core methodology! Bravo!

Thanks, Dr Spektor! It's always great to get that sort of response!
And thanks for the comments on 'Mental Bending', James and Dustin! It's exciting to have a BRAND NEW plot in the pk metal genre! Great to know that you guys are already out there surprising people with it! I also recieved a couple of private questions about 'Ideomaster' that I wanted to address here. Most wanted to know a little more information about it, so I will share what I wrote to them. 'Ideomaster' provides simple and organic methods to increase your tactile sensitivity to someone's ideomotor response, as well as enhance the ideomotor response of your participant. This chapter explores a couple of the more surefire ideomotor demonstrations, but most importantly, it delves into WHY they are more surefire. The 'Ideomaster' process also does away with some common teachings in the muscle reading genre, which makes a HUGE difference to your success. Best of all, these new concepts can be easily integrated into nearly any ideomotor-based effect that you already do! |

When I first saw Matthew's work hit the marketplace several years ago, I shrugged it off as just another dvd, same old same old. Matt proved me wrong over and over and over again. I'm basically an addict of all of the $5 and $10 ideas he's published over at penguin and by himself, and so naturally, I was VERY intrigued by the mothership set of notes: State of Mind.
I'm very picky about material. I do a LOT of research before buying, and I use maybe 25% of what I've bought. Not just about money, but time. I work full-time performing across the board: stage, closeup, etc. So it isn't just a monetary investment, but a valuable time investment as well. With that said, I'd like to give my opinion on State of Mind. Regarding the notes as a whole, this is solid thinking. Matt basically just thinks outside the box. The ideas are very logical, and safe, and practical. With that said, in my opinion, I believe much of the material in these notes is best used subtly. We all know how epic Psychological Subtleties is, and people like Luke Jermay have taken subtlety and created full shows out of it. State of Mind is a lot of that. If you like Banachek and Luke Jermay, this is the kind of thing they would use. There are LOTS of tools here. Metal Bending: This is one of those things you've probably never thought of, and when you read it, you will kick yourself for not thinking of it first. Very clever. I grinned really big on this one. The Line Test: This is a really good idea, and effortlessly adapted to the drawing dupe routine you are already doing. Not surefire, but it's a subtlety, so you're only helping yourself by doing this. Heritage/Instrumental/Mind Matrix/Solar System: These are all connected in that they spawn from the same core psychological principle. I saw a friend utilize this principle in a card trick for me many many years ago and always thought it was interesting, but it wasn't the right fit for a card trick. Matt has taken this genuine psychological principle and applied it to general thoughts. Heritage focuses on names and relationships. Instrumental puts your audience in front of an invisible orchestra. Mind Matrix puts the ball in their court and shows you how to adapt this to anything. From star signs to sports to food. Whatever you want. Solar System takes this approach to Cold Reading and essentially warms you from the start so you're not so cold going in. This is a cool idea and I'm having a lot of fun just exploring plots and premises and layering this with other methods. Lots of creative inspiration just from this alone. A Subtle Afterthought: I like this a lot because more than an effect, Matt has exposed the subtle power of our script. I definitely recommend using time misdirection in this, just because it will only make it better if you do. I'm seeing this as a potentially strong opener for a think of a card plot. It could really give an effect strong credibility right out of the gate. The Hidden Temple: Awesome. Just awesome. I laughed because this is awesome. Ideomaster: I've never enjoyed this premise. That's just me. But I feel that Matt's ideas here definitely fix some of the reasons why I've never liked ideomotor response as a method. If you like pendulum work, or ideomotor movement work, you'll benefit greatly from this section. Matt ideas are about layering the deception so that the method gradually becomes more opaque the deeper one goes. Overall, I don't have anything negative to say about this. I wouldn't go into these notes expecting commercial mentalism or packaged mental magic tricks. Instead, go into State of Mind, with the "state of mind" that you are getting some new tools, and sharpening some of the ones you already have. I just don't see this being a bad investment for hardly anyone. Much to be appreciated. :] ||sean ||

I just want to echo what others are saying here. Matt's releases are always worth the small investment. This book is a lovely treasure of material. MENTAL BENDING is not hype. Matt telling you it's worth the price of admission is an understatement. The short essay that precedes it is invaluable. I don't know Matt but I hope that will change one day!

Thanks for the comprehensive review, Sean! I look forward to hearing how you decide to use all of the ideas!
That's awesome that you liked the material enough to do a video review, Jakob! It was great hearing what you had to say about all of the different items! Thanks, CC! I had thought that a lot of people wouldn't fully appreciate that opening chapter, as it was just a presentation, but I'm glad to be proven wrong! It really is quite a powerful perception change for your audience. |

Alright, I spent the last week and a half preparing and performing a few of the effects from Matt's new book... Let me just tell you, as someone who tends to shy away from most mentalism effects, THIS BOOK IS PHENOMENAL!!!
Some of my favorites include: Instrumental - This effect, as with most of Matt's stuff, plays much better in the real world than it does on paper. You just have to go and do it and find out on your own that it works. Nearly every. single. time. It just works, and it looks like the real thing. Mental Bending - This effect went straight out of the manuscript and into my walk around act. Like, immediately. Last weekend I gave multiple close up and parlor performances at a 24 hour magic marathon. I must have performed Mental Bending 10+ times and EVERY time it was a huge hit. This was even frying the brains of seasoned magicians. I really can praise it highly enough. Matt could have easily charged more than $40 for just this effect alone. And the best part??? If you're familiar with Matt's other effect, Energy Coins, you can transition between the two effects very easily, effectively creating what will probably be the most killer metal manipulation routine you've ever done. Straight up insanity. I think that even more than how wonderful the effects in State of Mind are, is what they do to you as a performer. Matt's methods are so bold, and a lot of times you will read his method and think to your self, "there's no way that's going to work." So what Matt forces you to do is have a little moxy. Once you build up the courage to perform methods so bold and realize that THEY DO ACTUALLY WORK, something changes in you, and suddenly, you aren't afraid of anything. You are ready to go all in because Matt has shown you that sometimes you just have to lay it all on the line and go for it. Sometimes you just have to trust yourself. So what are you doing? Why are you still reading this when you could be nose deep in State of Mind? Between it and Bannon's new book, you're going to be plenty busy for a looong time, so get to it! You won't regret it! |

Hey guys,
In the video I forgot to mention Ideomaster! Shame on me! It's a lovely little essay on the use of contact mind reading. Inside the essay Matt touches in depth on his thinking on his approach that makes contact mind reading ungodly easy. Personally, I've been using contact mind reading on and off attempting to build my confidence in the technique, Matt's essay has me doing it again with a vengeance! XX, -Jakob |

The way that muscle reading is currently taught, it would take a lifetime to master. I think this is a big part of what puts people off from practicing it. And even when you're highly skilled with the classic technique, you will still have inconsistent results, as you always need to find the 'Perfect Participant' in order for those instructions/suggestions to truly take hold.
With 'Ideomaster', I've culled the techniques that provide consistent results and removed the instructions that prohibit the ideomotor response, allowing any ideomotor movements to easily manifest themselves. This makes detecting the ideomotor response a MUCH more reliable process. I can guarantee that you will have more success using this new apporach. |

Aaide: One thing from Neal Scryer book - I think Black - was a method to do pseudo-muscle reading - combine both as a failsafe and practice away!

Thanks for that addition! Jakob had also mentioned "The Baillie Addendum" by Docc Hilford as a good way to practice the technique. Of course, a simple card !@#$* and reveal is an easy way to practice, as well.
The concepts in Ideomaster don't take long to get the hang of, and then you can start doing it for real! |

Hey guys,
After receiving a few requests about whether or not I would release the effects from State of Mind as single-effect PDF's, I've decided to do so for two of the pieces. Since "Mental Bending" has been getting a ton of attention, I've decided to make it available on it's own for $15.00 to anyone who is interested. And as I've been receiving many inquiries about "Mind Matrix", I've made that it's own PDF, as well. "Mind Matrix" will also include the chapters "Heritage", "Instrumental" and "Solar System", as they all share the same underlying concept. This 31 page PDF will be available for $15.00 Payments can be sent to mattmello88@gmail.com through Paypal I will also make a special offer to anyone who decides to purchase these individual manuscripts. If you buy one, and wish to buy the entire book, you can purchase it for $25. And if you purchase both and decide you want the entire book, you can simply send another $10 and I will send you State of Mind in it's entirety. So, if you want to get a sneak peek at the material before committing to purchase, these should help you to make a decision! Have a good one, everybody! Matt |

I enjoyed the book it has some good ideas and got me thinking.
Personally I think the book should be sold as is, as it's worth it and it isn't expensive. |

Thanks for the comments, mindguru. State of Mind is still available as is. I'm just providing another option for those who may only be interested in purchasing Mental Bending or the Mind Matrix ideas on their own, or can't afford the entire thing at the moment and want a preview. For some, $40 is expensive. But I appreciate you encouraging people to purchase the entire work, and that you felt it was worth the time and money you invested!

I was so impressed with this manuscript I persuaded Matt to allow me to host it on my own site. Heritage is worth the price of the book, in my opinion and is a beautiful prop-less tool to use alongside mine and Ross Tayler's Ouija.
