I must say, I bought the James Coats' DVD and it was absolutely rubbish! I mean, they even got caught several times during the DVD and did not even bother for a re-take. And the methods they use. Please, if jump up and down in front of the spectator and move your feet like Ali, I think they'll know something fishy is about to happen.
If you want to learn good techniques and subtle way of doing the same please buy James Freedman's DVD. It is made professionally and I can see it working so much better. N.b. I have no connections to either performers. I am merely a disappointed consumer. |

By the way, you should know that if they are caught, they are pretty much obliged to include it in the showing. For instance, once Derren Brown's effect (on the Tube) didn't have the desired effect. IT is on his DVD and on that scene, in the Directors commentary he talks about how this should be included, to show that it does not always go to plan.

Can you share with us the experience when you performed the pickpocketing maneuver and got caught? Did first try to listen to your explanation or did they go for your throat? One of the pickpocketing DVDs preview had a warning and was curious how the spectator reacted.

Does anyone know about this online edition of Eddie Joseph's book, "How to Pick Pockets?" The online version is called Pickpocketing for Magicians.

Go On, Steal Yourself by James Freedman
Another new book on picpocketing, but I'm not sure whether the book is the same with the DVD or not. |

I posted this in another section of the Café also, but I think you might enjoy reading this:
From the Ripley's Believe It or Not! Special Edition 2004, page 41: "In the late 1700s, a London thief picked the pocket of Judge John Silvester while being found not guilty of picking other pockets! He later confessed and returned the judge's watch." I'd like to see his DVD! Jack Shalom

Do the people have to wear suits. I want to do it at school and everyone will be wearing bluejeans and tee shirts. Should I buy something else?
Thanks. Zack |

Jeans, as long as not tight and pretty much any jacket will be good to pick-pocket. However, look presentable, as to pick-pocket you must look clean and well-shaven as you will be touching them a lot, which they may not be comfortable with.

In this business you do get caught no matter how good you are. The truly great pickpocket will know how to turn that to his advantage. I know Bob Arno, knew Rickie Dunn and these two really knew what they were doing. Great entertainers and masters of spectator control which is truly the important thing of pickpocketing.

Derren Brown discusses some great ideas about pickpocketing, and also what to do and say if you get caught.
Chappy Brasil's dvd on Watch stealing has a list of outs for you to choose from also. I really enjoy using pickpocketing as my act. I lifted my first wallet at a BBQ on the weekend, I showed this to the guy putting on the party and we made a big production of it. Smiles and laughs from everyone, especially from the guy who 'lost' the wallet. I believe as long as you present it right, (don't make the guy look like he is stupid) and make sure you pick the guy who is enjoying himself, then pickpocketing should pose little if any problems. Presentation and crowdcontrol. |
