Does anyone own this? It's the effect where three white wreaths turn into three different colored wreaths, then they all turn into one large multi-colored wreath.
It sounds pretty and visual by the description, but it's price is relatively low ($15-$19). I was wondering why it was so cheap? Is it poor quality? Is it a bad trick in general? Any feedback?

Hello Pangea, I can tell you this. For what you get it has a very good price but the secret is pretty obvious. The wreaths AREN'T GAFFED and the only solution for accomplishing the trick is the most simple (let's say the first method that comes to a layman's mind). This means you can use this trick only for children, SMALL children. Children really love it because it is colourful and made of feathers and with a good presentation it can be a very nice routine.

Thanks Academy,
I figured the method was likely the first, and most obvious one I thought of, because if there was any intricate gimmick involved, it would surely be more than $15. I will probably pass on this and invest in a higher-end and more practical effect suitable for a wider range of ages.

Just a quick note,
The colour changing wreathes is the best value in magic, not only that but if performed correctly is great for both adults and kids. I can back this up! In 2003 I competed for the PCAM platform magic competition and got 1st place, a feature in that act was the colour changing wreathes. Effects that you buy are not good until you fuse your personality into them! If you pass up this trick you are passing up a GREAT bargain...Trust me! Matthew. |

Thanks Matthew,
I know a trick/prop doesn't have to cost a small fortune to be effective and entertaining. I have not completely cancelled out this effect yet. I have a show coming up this Summer that I might end up using the wreath effect in.

Just a curiosity matthewjohnson. Was the jury composed of magicians or laymen?
I have a theory: A good trick in the hands of a great performer becomes a miracle. A good trick in the hands of a bad performer becomes a bad trick. But a bad trick remains a bad trick. Even if you put all your personality and showmanship in it it still remains a bad trick. Instead of putting all these efforts in inproving something that cannot be improved why don't you start with a good trick from the very beginning? Sincerely Academy P.S. I saw a very GOOD version of the color-changing wreaths but the props were different from those marketed for $15. In other words it wasn't the trick we are discussing here. |

Academy,
Good point. As it happens the crowd was composed of only magicians and the judges were very well known magicians. The colour changing wreaths is the one straight out of the bag. The only difference is that the wreaths I have are the feather kind as opposed to the big pom pom style rings, this means the bag used is very flat in performance. The silks I use are diamond cut and finally I do many other things around the colour changing wreaths (cane productions, blendo, confetti cannon etc, etc). Having said that the wreaths is very much a main focus point of the act. I agree that you are not going to win IBM with the wreaths and I have taken the act about as far as it will go competition wise, but let's be honest for the price this has got to be one of the best deals in magic and when I perform it for lay people it rocks EVERY time! Lay people like it because it is full of colour, surprise and has a kicker finish. I don't believe a bad trick is a bad trick, after all who ever invented the trick in the first place must of had some kind of success with it and thought it worthy to put the time and effort into inventing it. I do admit that some tricks are much better than others but the PERFORMER is what makes the trick. Just my thoughts, Cheers, Matthew. |

I have used the color changing wreaths and got great reactions from them, especially when the three rings fuse together in mid air when I throw them. I have seen many different presentations with the rings and feel they are an awesome investment. Don't discount this trick, especially if you are looking at putting some color and pop into your act. The rings can be used to represent different things and a creative patter involving three things that at first are the same (all white), then slightly different (different colors), and then united as one will make this effect really stand out.

I use this too and I always hear "Ooh"s from the audience. It goes over very well despite how simple it seems. I bought it from Steve Taylor and use his handling which gets 3 volunteers invovled and works in a message about individuality and teamwork. It goes over well.

I was surprised to see this topic brought back to life almost TWO years after I started it! lol
I ended up purchasing the Wreaths shortly after making this thread. I used them in many shows over the last couple years. I played around with some routines/scripts, but tried performing them to music one day, and it became my favorite way to perform the effect. I was all set to open with the Wreaths at a show this summer for about 50 kindergarten students - and then, the night before the show, I was practicing with the wreaths and the wire on the big wreath snapped! I was worried at first, because I lost my opener. But the loss of the wreath opener resulted in me creating a really fun balloon opener that I use in almost every show now. So it all ended well. I really should pick up a new set of wreaths, I was really starting to enjoy them. Has anyone else had their big wreath snap like mine?

I had the cheaper set for a while then purchased a good set from Stevens Magic Emporium. Much better quality.

I'm looking for the version of this effect that is made from YARN.
I have a set, but I'd like to buy another. Stevens has the feathers, and Robbins has the cheaper feathers.....but where to find the yarn?

Well, this question was asked three years ago, and now I'm wondering the same thing. Where can I find the version that is made from yarn? Is it still made? I purchased and used that version for several years. After I lost it in a house fire, I purchased the feather version and dislike it so much, I rarely use it.
The version made from yarn, came with a brown paper-sack material for the pouch. That needed to be redone, but the rings themselves didn't shed and worked like a charm.

Tim,
Thanks for the info. I sent an email to Dave, but from the picture on his site, it seems like he carries the feather version now. I have a feeling that theses are no longer made.

The best ones made IMHO are the SEO Kikuchi ones shown above. While I do not actually have a set I have seen most of them and these are the best.

I just bought the feather version. It looks fine. Like some on this post, I stayed away from this effect for a long time because I felt it was too obvious how it was done. But after getting it, I was suprised at how much I like it. It is colourful, angle proof, packs small, can be done anywhere, with or without volunteers and works great with music. It is also great close or on stage too. This is an effect that has colour and is very visual with a great ending. In my opinion, the entertainment value in this outweighs it's obvious method. If performed with flair and you put your personality into it and show your audience you are having fun, they will too! Highly recommended.
Yours truly, Vincent. |

I use this in 90%+ of my shows. I perform it in the silent part of my act (silent of words but have music). I have never got a bad reaction with this. I feel for the price this is a GREAT buy and effect. I use it in both adults and kids shows. Always gets great reactions. Highly recommened.
