I'm on a diet. I lost about seven pounds in the last two weeks. Where did it go? Seriously.

Check the dryer with those missing socks.
Seriously, the first few pounds is usually shed water weight. Scientifically speaking, concerning energy changing form and your body calling upon fat reserves and all that- I'll leave that to the smarter people around here.

I 'went on a diet' last August, but then changed it to 'changed my diet' - began eating better and I've taken off 20 kilos (40 pounds) since then but keep looking over my shoulder in case they catch up with me. I would like to lose another 10 but it's very slow going now so I am going to eventually have to increase my physical activity. With that in mind I bought an exercise bike about 5 weeks ago and I think it is having some effect - I must burn off some calories looking at it and contemplating getting on it.

But that's my point--where did the 40 lbs go? Did you just pee and poop it out? There has to be some waste product from the elimination of the fat doesn't there?

The fat was turned into carbs and burned for energy.
Carbs are used as fuel. When you have too much, it gets turned into fat for storage. When you go on a diet, you body starts using the fat turning it back to carbs to burn, which is not a very efficient process. Which is why low carb diets work so fast. They force the body to burn the fat for energy. Once the fat is used up, your body starts burning muscle. Your heart is a muscle, and that's when you die. Not a stupid question, but I also don't have a funny answer for you. Just the real answer. Randi |

While I don't know - I'm theorising - not necessarily, because if you burn it up as energy - the waste product left to be eliminated as faeces or urine would weigh less than the original fuel burned? Or at least if we acted like a furnace, that would be the case.
I'm pretty sure that when I was first losing weight and it was coming off much more rapidly than now, there were times I weighed myself before bed, and then when I woke up, without any visits to eliminate waste, and weighed less in the morning than the night before. Is there a doctor in the house? |

If I burn paper, the resulting ash and smoke if I remember my high school chemistry correctly actually weighs more than the original paper, because of the oxygen captured in the process. Where, what happens to those waste products from my carbs turned into energy?

There is not an actual fire in your belly or anything.
There is no little man shoveling carbs into a furnace. It's just a way to describe it. Carbs are carbohydrates... Which is Carbon and Hydrogen. We are a carbon based life form, so the carbon goes into us to replace other atoms. The hydrogen... Well, I don't really know the facts of where it goes or if it's used some way. But hydrogen is the most basic element there is. One proton and one electron. It could come out as a gas when you breath out for all I know. Randi |

Some is burned as energy the rest gets converted into waste materiel.
And on the topic of carbs, not all carbs are created equal from what I hear. Carbs from processed foods like white rice and white flower are the bad guys that create sugar spikes and are suspected to be a heavy contributor to diabetes. Carbs from vegitables are supposedly healthier for you.

Carbs are sugar.
A plant takes in carbon dioxide from the air. CO2... That's One carbon and two oxygen. It takes in water from the ground. H2O... That's two hydrogen and one oxygen. The plant takes the oxygen and releases it into the air, which we breathe. (Thanks plants) It takes the carbon and hydrogen to make sugars. Depending how the atoms are arranged, depends on what it is. Glucose, sucrose, fructose, etc. It all gets metabolized to the same thing in your body. It's still just carbon and hydrogen. Randi |
