Well, I think your transformation looks amazing. Congratulations! I'm super impressed and think you've got a lot to be proud about.
With all that biking, running and swimming you oughta try tri! Your AFTER picture looks like a lot of guys I've met at the staging areas I've been to. |

I've been watching the Giro d'Italia race while exercising on the exercise bike. I can just about match their speed...so long as they are tackling a mountain! I'm dead after 90 minutes and those guys are travelling faster for five to six hours with a sprint at the end...and doing it for three weeks! As for being proud...I'm not really. I'm more like the reformed sinner...I want obese people to know that there is hope out there and that they too can have a better future. There is nothing to be proud of. I got myself into that fix by not taking care of myself. The person who should be proud is the smart ones who have always looked after themselves. |

You'd be surprised Kim. Triathlons are for everyone at every age and you don't have to be fast. The shortest triathlon is a sprint triathlon and it consists of a half mile swim, a 12 mile bike ride and a 3 mile run. Most people who enter triathlons are called 'age-groupers', which means they are really just competing within their age group, in your case 55-59 year olds. (My age group by the way.)
I'll bet you could complete the swim in under 30min, the bike ride in well under an hour, and the run in around 30-40 minutes. Nothing more than a typical 2 hour workout for you! I just googled Perth Triathlon and found one that's even shorter! It's Swim (pool) 500m, Bike 16km, Run 3km. It's possible though that triathlon fever hasn't hit Perth like it has the US as I can't find a lot of triathlons out there, especially for the size of Perth. Here in little Utah, it seems as though we have a triathlon somewhere in the state nearly every week once the season hits. |

Well I could do the bike leg easily enough and the run (although my jogging isn't very fast...I can jog forever).
It would be the 500 metres pool leg that would be my downfall. I'm lousy at freestyle (what a confession for an Australian to make since it was an Australian that popularised the Front Crawl aka the Australian Crawl). Because I had a belly hernia the size of my fist while I was losing weight all my exercises were leg based in order not to make things worse (I didn't want to literally bust a gut). Vigorous swimming strokes like freestyle and the butterfly were out. Most of my swimming laps were done using breaststroke (with and without the using the legs). If I used breaststroke during the race...everyone would be finished before I completed the first leg! Besides I like to do my exercise at night. Do they have midnight triathlons? I really enjoy jogging and bike riding the deserted streets at night listening to music. Guess if it comes right down to it; triathlon would be too crowded for me. I enjoy my own company too much...I get enough of crowds when I'm working. Thanks for the thought and the encouragement. When is your next triathlon? And what are the distances? |

My daughter, knowing my goal to complete an Ironman this year, got me a book for my birthday called, "You are an Ironman", which chronicled stories of six ordinary people who decided to complete an Ironman distance triathlon. (It's the big one, 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride, and 26.2 mile run.) At least half of them were not great swimmers and worried about the swim. One of them did the entire swim using the breaststroke! One lady had a phobia of swimming in open water and had to develop meditation techniques while in the water to overcome her fear. She made the swim cutoff with only 30 seconds to spare! (I think the cutoff for the swim is 2 hours and 20 minutes.) One person of the six had to cancel their plans due to an injury to their kneed 6 months before the planned race but all the other five completed it. (You have 17 hours to complete an Ironman while the elites can finish in 8-9 hours.) In an Ironman race, many of the age-groupers will end up walking large portions of the 26 mile run course.
Generally, music devices are not allowed on the course for safety reasons. I'm not aware of any night time triathlons but it wouldn't surprise me. I just started doing triathlon last year with the goal of completing an Ironman before I turn 60 next year. Last year I completed to Sprint distance tris, 2 Olympic distance tris, (about double the length of the sprint), and one Half Ironman. This year, I've got a number of races lined up to keep me motivated as I work towards the Ironman in November. I've done one sprint, one half marathon, weekend after this I'm doing a full Marathon in San Diego, followed by another Half Ironman mid June and an Olympic distance mid-July. I'll tell you, those first two sprint distance tri's were killer. Each had a pretty good hill on the bike ride and I was so wiped out after the bike portion that I walked at least half of the 5K on each of them. When I did the Half Ironman last November, I was so dead at the end I thought, "I'll never be able to do a full Ironman next year!". But by the next morning, I was feeling so much better that I felt like, "I just need to train a little harder and more consistently and I'll be able to do it." If you've got the inclination and time and it's not too far away, you should drive down to this one and watch it a week from Sunday. http://perthtriathlon.blogspot.com/p/registration.html |
