Cheating can be defined in many ways but it’s simple when it comes to games or competitions with a ref. Rules govern the contest and the ref decides.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Correct, Tommy. And I feel the ref made a poor decision in not warning Ali.

That is OK. I think the Ref could have warned him if in his view Ali was not fighting back. In fact the Ref could have given a technical KO if he thought Ali was no longer able to continue.
That is a risk you take when playing the rope a dope. The ref can think, it’s all over, if the boxer, is on the ropes, you might say.

In particular, among other things, he: 1) Often retreated to rest against the ropes and let Foreman punch himself out, taking the shots mostly on his arms. 2) Held frequently and often delayed promptly breaking when instructed to. 3) Grabbed and pushed Foreman behind his head and neck. You're saying that all of this, in conjunction, is the "Rope a Dope"; others are saying that 1) is the Rope a Dope, and 2) and 3) are things that Ali did in addition. Rather than make any progress as to whether or not particular things are legal or illefal, and which things (the I I tial thrust of the discussion), you're going back and forth on the definition. AFAIK, everyone who is disagreeing with you is saying that 1) is not illegal; while you're saying that 1), 2), and 3), in combination, are illegal. It's ok with me if all all want to go back and forth for eternity; I'm just noting for the record that you're having two separate discussions.

Again, it's not illegal. It's a very punishing strategy for whoever uses it.
Lobo- Note also how frequently Ali shot a quick jab from the rope a dope stance. Those also took their toll in wearing Forman down and setting up the eventual knockout. I believe that the fight in Zaire remains one of the greatest examples of savvy ring strategy that I've ever seen. Ali was never more brilliant in the ring. |

The Mayweather Pacquiao fight was indeed epic.
I can't believe something so dull made so much money without Peter Jackson being involved.

What Ali did on that day WAS DUBBED the rope a dope. That is, allowing the opponent to approach, taking any delivered blows on the arms (hopefully) , tie him up, hold him, survive the round. that's the rope a dope. NOT anything else. CERTAINLY not leaning against the ropes and absorbing crushing blows for 15 rounds WITHOUT holding and grabbing the head. That is suicide. |

I imagine you have all read Norman Mailer's 'The Fight'.
I have no interest in boxing but found the book a remarkable read; still wasn't interested in boxing but the personalities and their stories hooked me totally. And I don't think Mailer failed to describe a single second of the actual fight. |

Now I read that two Nevada residents are trying to sue Pacquiao because they bought tickets and made bets being unaware of his shoulder injury.
What a couple of sore losers. Only in America! |

The surgery came four days after Pacquiao fought Mayweather at the MGM Grand hotel in Las Vegas, dropping a unanimous 12-round decision. Pacquiao asked for a pain killing shot before the fight for his shoulder, but was denied by Nevada boxing officials because they weren’t aware previously of the injury. Nevada boxing officials are considering disciplinary action against Pacquiao for not disclosing the injury on a form the day before the fight.
