I envy you if you are so well recognized and get such requests for repeat performances.

I would think that where you go in those towns is not random at all, but that is a different matter.

Even when I was performing a lot of effects in my "camp strolling" days at Medieval events I was well known tot he extent of people shouting, "Come to our camp next."

But in three years and hundreds of performances I never had anyone distinguish between how I held an object or which hand I used or how many objects were in play.

Perhaps the difference was that I wasn't trying to make a living doing it and didn't care if they remembered me or not.

My objective was to create a memory of magic as it might have been done in Medieval times.
.
I would suggest that "louder reactions" does not always indicate "an experience of real magic."

My goal has never been to "insure maximum reaction." I prefer they have a story to tell their grandchildren decades from now.

You desire to have "you" remembered. I want magic to be remembered.

Not a criticism of your approach. Just don't make assumptions about what other magicians do and why they do it.

You are right in your assessment that most people calling themselves magicians don't do magic very well.

I do not perform often these days because I do put importance on what I choose to perform. I never perform "on demand" or feel obligated to perform what is requested.

I am not an entertainer and have no desire to be one. That does not suggest that what I choose to do is not very magical and profound.

Complete silence is the best reaction I can get. Guess I just prefer to be invisible and allow magic to be the hero.

If 3Fly inherently more magic than Coins Across?

Does "at the fingertips" come across as more powerful magic than "in my a person's hand?"

After 50,000+ performances I still do not know.

Which is why I read your posts and learn.

Hi Jim... yeah been touring... doing concerts here and abroad. Will do a European tour then to Dubai. Aside from that, I became councilor in my city. Recently I went back to serious competetive Darts. All that while running my own bar. I did not know I could juggle pretty well.

Take care!

oh yeah.... Mabuhay!

Nice stuff Rannie, I'm guessing you have studied a lot of variations of 3Fly?

MoonDragon1 Retro fly is a great short and clean version of 3Fly.
Here is a unedited clip of me doing it I filmed last week. Its nice, but I don't think it'll be me 'final' 3Fly, I feel its a good jumping off point.

Your right J-mac! I had been editing video late at night (not only magic). And reading magic Café posts as I was waiting for video process, I got a bit muddled and had a brain fart!
Yes it's Sanchez Fly which I bought after someone here recommended it! I made one or two small handeling changes and will probably make some more. I just found my TKO 2 while unpacking some stuff. Smile

This is my version of 3Fly which uses an expanded[ which I call "Fly"

Visually it's similar to Mike Eaton's "Pretty Fly" and David Gabbay's "Sanchez Fly" (Both of which have been mentioned earlier, but I HIGHLY recommend)

I use it in every single walk around gig that I do. It's really easy to do and will actually appear in my column, "Show on the Go", in VANISH Magazine

Hey Moondragon it's actually just Josh lol
Glad you liked the routine! As for the MP, the best advice I have is to just practice, practice, practice. Jay Noblezada has a DVD on the MP that really helped me when I was learning it. Good luck!

Thanks Moondragon Smile I had only practised this effect for week or two before filming it. I really just filmed it for this thread as you can see from my first post etc. I'm thinking of polishing my coins and practising some more and filming it again soon.

For more of my videos yes you can check youtube. My 'official channel' is http://www.youtube.com/TheJoePiper
But you can search you youtube for some other stuff I worked with other people on such as the Cat's Meow cabaret and some indie projects.

Seconding Sanchez and Sankey's 3 fly routines.
Sankey's in particular is fairly easy to do.

You still have to have one more thing, aren't you? I thought impromptu literally means you do it without any preparation, but I don't think anyone does 3 Fly with quarters or new dollar coins; I think everyone usually uses dollar size coins or at least half dollars, so if you are going to have non-gimmick version in your pocket everyday, why don't you just carry a [ and three coins? It is much cleaner.

There are several approaches available using not 'extra' or gaff. I agree on what 'impromptu' should mean, but most magicians include "extemporaneous" as well, i.e. being prepared.

The original concept of 3Fly as up in front of your face, one-at-a-time visual transportation has apparently morphed into any 'coins across' effect done in the hands with 3 coins in stead of the traditional 4.

If so, there are many effects with 'found objects' that would fit, and employ objects other than coins such as candy, stones, nuts and borrowed coins.

I wish that 3Fly was more aligned with Jonathan's creation and a different focus made for 'objects across' and the techniques involved.

My point is that either an 'extra' or gaff or [ is not a requirement.

See Sankey's Mexican Jumping coins as an example.

3 fly does not require any set up besides having either 4 coins or 3 and a [ in your pocket. I have to disagree to an extent about shelled routines being cleaner, as I have seen cleaner 3fly routines.w/ soh cleaner than some shelled routines. depends on your handling. I've seen ryu ka's 3fly routine he has on youtube which I love, especially love his 3 coin transit. I actually have taken a lot of inspiration off of ryu ka's 3 fly routine in emperor. I still use his move, I'm sure you know the one I'm talking about. but I have changed up quite a bit to make it more or less my own. I have also found a way to make three coins travel at once. though I cannot take credit for the actual move (its from chef tsao's holy cow dvd, which id highly recommend to anyone simply for the sleights and.ideas), ive found a way to incorporate it into my 3fly.if he doesn't like his emperor routine I think he is just being modest imo. I thought it was one of the most original 3fly's I've seen. I could only hope ryu ka releases more material, id love to see more of his work, id be one of the first to buy whatever he put out.

What I meant by "cleaner" is... hmm.... before start performing 3fly, I don't have to hide anything. I always feel like a routine like 3 fly should convince my participant that there is no extra coin whatsoever. Anyways, it is just my personal problems. Everyone has their own definition of "clean" lol

Btw, Ryu-ka found a magic company and he will make some DVDs with them. I will be in part of that too and there are some other amazing coin workers from Japan making some DVDs with that company too!! There will be a bunch of insane coin DVDs launching at the beginning of 2016 Smile

I am 999% sure you will love all the coin DVDs from that company if you love abusing fingers with coins.

Yeah I hear you on convincing your spectator that you only have 3 coins, and of course a shell would be cleanest in that respect. I personally just do the utility spread while using 4 coins, the move shown by ponta in his 3 fly routine(not sure about the origins of the move). but I've found that move to be really useful in a lot of different situations. I haven't had anyone second guess so far, or as far as I know.

I've found that there are a lot of really talented underground japanese magicians in general out there. a lot of them have really creative stuff and a nice style to present it with. I'll definitely keep a look out for those dvds in 2016, really looking forward to it. I think coin magic is due for another "sick" dvd (pun intended). but keep us posted whenever things start coming out!
