I own a lot of releases from Rus and am a fan of his work.
I like this for what it is, particularly the impromptu nature. However, I do have a few issues: - It was never mentioned in the ad copy, but it is intended to be performed for 2 people. While you can adapt it for one spectator, the scripting isn't provided for that scenario (and this effect relies heavily on the script to help hide the method). - The ad copy states the principle used is old and overlooked, yet I would bed to disagree- I think every magician is familiar with this principle. - I feel its overpriced at $15 With that said, I do like this and look forward to trying this out. |

Maybe it was performed badly, either way, you are obviously entitled to your opinion, you shouldn't really expose the method, or in this case, part of the method.

I just performed this exactly as written to a couple of college buddies the other day and it went very well. The spectators don't know what's happening until you reveal the prediction and the card. When I asked them later what they thought of it (along with others I performed throughout the night) they didn't even remember a crucial part of the method that I will not mention. I think the script at the end is very good and will only aide in the process of the overall effect.
Very simple and very devastating. |

I am a very capable sleight of hand performer & can do various moves effortlesly without having to think about them. I do this all the time when I work.
Hovever, I also like to put in something which is easy to do if the EFFECT ION THE PEOPLE WATCHING IS WORTH IT. This delivers on EVERYONE (well it does when I do it). Granted I have been getting paid for this for years & am a entertainer(bottom line). To me it doesn't matter if something fools me or not( practically nothing does these days, or if it does, two beats later the penny drops and all becomes clear). I like this and have tried it quite a few times & it astouns people(not because they know how it works, but because they are amazed. Well done, Rus. I like this and will always have this in my arsenal to use. Mike Donoghue |

Cheers mike,
Glad you like this, when performed with the scripting it creates a great moment. A lad performed this at the magic circle yesterday and got great reactions. All the best R |

This is a nice piece. I agree with Rus and think this is better performed as an open prediction than a CAAN. It involves the spectators choosing a number and I feel it is best to dwell on the selection of that number as little as possible and presenting it as CAAN draws additional attention to the number.
It can be performed with a borrowed shuffled deck – which does not need to be complete or in good condition. It is a rare treat to find something which can work under those situations – and this is more or less self working. It is worth mentioning that this is very similar to other approaches to the effect, so at first you may feel like you’ve seen this somewhere before. But what Rus has brought to the method is the way he splits it in half, making it harder to backtrack the method. One part of the method feels unreliable (the first key part), but if it doesn’t work there is an easy and obvious way around this but it isn’t explained in the pdf. The scripting is nice. I always like those moments where you can summarise an effect and everyone has to agree with what you said, even though it hides some of the full story. In this case it works very well and may help to create a false memory of the events. I love that Rus suggests some other uses of the method, different premises, all without specific methods. This leads you to a place where you can consider other ways to use the method and work out how to best make it suit you. The method has some draw backs, and I certainly won’t be using this in every situation. Stronger and more direct (in appearance) approaches can be found at the expense of the totally impromptu nature of this routine. This is a great method for those times when someone hands you a deck of cards. I’m particularly fond of a method using a gaff but I rarely carry it with me and this is a suitable replacement. In performance this has gone down really well. I’ve only used it a few times, each time was very casual, in a bar with friends. Every performance was successful, with great reactions. I’ll be using this regularly for these kind of situations. Cheers, Sam |

Okay, I'm finally reviewing Count Me In. Sorry for the delay Rus, since I received a review copy almost two weeks ago. I wanted to perform it at least once, and have now done so, three times, once for a magician, and twice for non magician coworkers and a family friend. First let me say, I'm a fan of Rus' work and really enjoy his approach to magic, especially AKA and his more recent, Spoken. If you're not familiar with either, do yourself a favor and check them out, they're incredible. Now that you can probably see where I'm heading, I must say I've had mixed results with Count Me In, one somewhat positive and the other a mixed reaction. Without going into detail and exposing the handling, I'll just say that going from the first phase of the effect into the final revelation, to me, just seems too direct and obvious. Yes, I'm saying this from a magician's perspective and I think it's understood, this is not meant to be a magician fooler. I've followed the script, and most recently, added a bit more of a time delay and recap, in an attempt to create a "false memory", however when I questioned a friend re their thoughts, the counting aspect seemed apparent to her, even though she still couldn't really explain the final appearance of the card. Overall, it seemed to be viewed, as more puzzling than really mystifying. So, while not my favorite effect of Rus', I still plan to perform it whenever I get the chance, and try out other approaches in terms of the presentation, since starting with a shuffled deck is always nice, plus, I also favor the CAAN effect and don't want to totally dismiss this handling.
