Paul,
I didn't know that "Benjamin the Fly" was Dick Koornwinder's creation! That was a great little trick (I sold a bunch of them when I worked in a magic shop in the 70's). I'm not familiar with Roy Baker's paddle effect. Could you describe it (maybe via PM since it's off topic)? wsduncan and Jonathan Townsend recently told me that Steven Minch's book "Creations of a Magical Madman" contains some routines with plastic flies. I was unaware of the book so recently ordered it from Mickey Hades. Oops, it looks like this entire posting is off-topic so I'll get back on-topic...I really suggest that everyone give the bill effect I mentioned above a try in the real world as it's practical and plays great. I agree with Frank that it is indeed a decent type of routine in impomptu situations but there are definitely better routines to be done. If you are in a place where there is napkins etc, then there is probably going to be a coffee cup nearby. I would think a single cup and balls routine would be more magical.
Of course if you can make 2 in the hand 1 in the pocket an entertaining routine then great! Just make sure you steer away from "and how many do I have left" From the words of Williamson about phrases like that - "Oh very entertaining". He even rolled his eyes when he said that! A sponge napkin routine would also be a good substitue - much more spectator involovement. Sorry I've gone off the subject now. |

"2 in the Hand" is a showpiece in the hands of Rick Anderson. I saw it over 15 years ago and still recall the magic that he drew from it. Funny, too, and now available in his book/lecture notes. It uses coins, spectators, and it wins contests.
And you haven't actually seen this routine done the way it should be done until you've seen Rene Levand's "Three Bread Crumbs". From the most humble props imaginable, poetry. Finally, I'll tip one idea I have applied (and that just might be appearing in an upcoming DVD release) the "2 in the Hand" does do one thing better than any other routine--it convinces the audience that you've got three items. What better time to switch to a "one behind" methodology?

Hey Curtis,
You Bring up 2 great points Renes is POETIC!!! and Ohh yeah the One behind sounds so fun to tango with... I will also add that John Lovick does a great 2 in the hand, coin routine and he states,"I am not a coin worker but this routine makes look like I am." Just to show you the strength of the little effect. Since I started this post. I've made a little list of a few items that can be toyed with. Match Sticks, Erasers, Marbles, If anyone thinks this effect is weak you should really try your best to remove the weak points out of it because you can have an amazing routine with what ever objects you end up with. Cheers Chris |

I was doing hand to pocket with a nut, a bolt and a washer back in the early 1970's before anyone had any videotaped routines with them. They are sort of an obvious choice for this routine.
A friend of mine uses small paper balls for this. At the end he places one ball into his hand, tosses a second in along with a half-dollar, and places the third in his pocket. When he asks how many are there, the spectator says "Three." He replies "No, two and a half." This is from Charlie Dodson - Trixie Bond's father. Hand to Pocket actually appeared in print, with patter, in Hocus Pocus Jr. The pocket was not used, but the principle which makes it work was. You could also do it with stones. You could do it with cherry pits and end up with a whole cherry. This is one of those things in which your imagination is the only limit.

I believe David Regal has a TIHOIP routine with batteries in Constant Fooling Book 1.
Check out my Main Event project (DVD or Download).

Here's a good one I found about a week ago, then I saw this thread...
In my "misc" box, I find a little 4" x 4" cardboard box, labelled, "Behind the 8 Ball"...four, 1" 8-Balls and a 2.5" 8-Ball...Paul Richards/Elmwood Magic (1998). It goes just like the old classic, except, you have one BIG one at the end...nice. It may come out and get played with, soon. This looks good, patter lines are weak, though...needs creative thinking, patter-wise. I HATE making the spectator look stupid (Or behind the 8-Ball). Quoting Bill, above, "This is one of those things in which your imagination is the only limit." Fertile imaginations abound here! Doug |

I saw david roth lecture about 10 years ago and he used small balls(about the size of those in behind the 8 ball)and a wonderful move by ed marlo for the most magical two in the hand one in the pocket I have ever seen,it has a production of the balls,a balls across phase ending with the 2 in hand one in pocket,
that one move kept me behind all the way to the end. |

I never much cared for the 2 in the hand, 1 in the pocket until I bought Frank Zak's routine: The Dice Game at the SAM convention last year. It uses casino dice, and never makes the spectator guess how many are in your hand. I now use it all the time in close-up situations.

I do Roth's routine all the time with 1"fakinis, but I don't think it quite qualifies. It is more of the Three Ball routine of Vernon and Garcia fame. If you like those better-find a copy of Frank Garcia' OOP The Real Secrets of Three-Ball routines-nothing but pure gold in there.

Dai Vernon's Climax to a Dice routine...Gets no better than that for a 2 in hand, 1 in pocket type routine. Back in my bartending days, I used to take a cocktail napkin...tear it into three pieces...do the 2 in hand, 1 in pocket...at the end, you wound up with only 1 piece...but it was the napkin totally restored.
