Inspired by an idea by Jamie D. Grant I thought it would be interesting to see what card effects users of the forum would choose if one would be able to choose what ten card effects one would be able to pull the rest of your life.
Bear in mind that you should be able to perform these effects with a normal deck "after some shuffling" whatever that might entail... My (incomplete) list: 1. Acr 2. Triumph 3. Lazy mans card trick 4. In hand transpo 5. Out of this world 6. Dr Daleys 7. Hot Shot Cut revelation I will be keeping score so I hope for MANY submissions! |

If it's just an ordinary pack and NOTHING else I can use, then:
1. ACR (needs a Sharpie as well, though...) 2. Triumph 3. Twisting The Aces (Dai Vernon's handling) + Dr. Daley's Last trick 4. Ten Card Poker Routine (probably Woody Aragon's handling) 5. Matching The Cards 6. Christ's Ace Routine (Roberto Giobbi's handling) 7. Galaxy (Paul Harris on OOTW) 8. Follow The Leader + Reset (using only eight cards) 9. Gemini Twins 10. A Cannibal Routine (probably Giobbi's from Card College) mlippo |

In no particular order:
- ACR - Cards Across - Dr. Daley's Last Trick - Hitchcock Aces (Darwin handling with my presentation) http://youtu.be/sO7ApKCoRC4 - Saving Ace ( http://youtu.be/zcIY9mwYcOw ) - Homing Card Plus - Mr E Takes a Stroll by Guastaferro - Triumph - Double-ment by Simon Aronson - Kismet by Michael Vincent Some of them need a little set up but it's easy to do from a shuffle deck. Helder

Chicago Opener
ACR(containing several variations of effects like "Smiley Face" {Kamm}...) Impossible Opener (Doc Eason) Card Under Box (Jonathan Kamm) Wedding Trick (Jon Allen) / Anniversary Waltz (any version) Triumph (slop shuffle or Bannon's) Twisting the Aces + Dr Daley's Last Trick (as kicker) Twins (Brother John Hamman) Cannibal (any of several versions) 3 Card Monte (again, many versions to choose from) One thing I noticed while compiling this list, is that these are all fairly simple effects to me. Maybe because I have been doing them for so many years over and over but there are tons of other effects, depending on the event that I would easily replace any or all of these effects with. Being that they are the effects (or at least the types of effects) I use the most, this would be my "top 10" most used.

Only 10?!
Well, after a bit of soul searching and (false) shuffling... Hat Trick by Roberto Giobbi Gambler's Luck by Harry Lorayne Twisting the Aces Dr Daley's Last Trick Really! by Harry Lorayne I Should Have Done It Myself by Fred Kaps courtesy of Bill Malone The 21 Card Trick by Bill Malone Cutting 10s- I think this is by Ed Marlo? again courtesy of Bill Malone The Piano Trick ACR There're lots more! This was a hard one! There are lots of one off things I like to do as gags and fillers like Card to Forehead or the trick Aaron Fisher does with the 2 Jokers as an intro to Search and Destroy that I will frequently use in conjunction with the above list as well. It would be hard to eliminate those. Fun thread!

Fun thread!!
In no particular order: Always Cut the Cards: Larry Jennings. This strong routine's built in convincers create an absolutely impossible looking piece of brilliant magic. [N.B.: J.K. Hartman has a really cool approach to this in CardCraft]. Ambitious Classic: Larry Jennings. It's ACR and a lot more in a sequence that is just long enough. Clock O' Doom for one person/Timely Departure for three: John Bannon: Mr. Bannon has produced some seriously devious magic, and these two are the routines that I feel best exemplify the thinking of this brilliant magician - and they are KILLERS Modern Jazz Aces: Darwin Ortiz. Of course we have to thank the great Peter Kane for the original routine but Mr. Ortiz's variant is an absolute joy to perform and addresses several (IMHO) glaring weaknesses of the Kane original. Fantastic Ace Assembly: Harry Lorayne. Beautiful routine that is highly magical and the construction leaves nothing to be desired. The Sting: Walt Maddison. This is an Oil and Water type routine with a VERY strong kicker. The Psychotronic Card: Darwin Ortiz. There's no rule about two deck routines. This is a joy to perform. A UK magician created a one deck version. Stay away from that version as it is inferior. Swindle Cut Aces: Fr. Cyprian. Find the book, learn the routine! Riding the Wave: Danny Korem. This gem feels a lot more like mentalism than magic and is a routine I wouldn't hesitate to recommend learning. It's VERY strong. Two Card Trick: Brother John Hamman. Bro. Hamman stated many times that magic happens not by the fingers of the magician but in the minds of the audience. This routine is a prime example of Bro. John's correct assertion. |

While I recognized most of the effects listed here, one of the ones I listed was called Small Packet Transposition. This is not a "real" title. I'm surprised nobody picked up on that. This is something I learnt years ago, but don't know the origin or what it's called. Maybe someone can help identify the title and/or originator, if I describe the effect:
Basically, a spectator shuffles the deck and counts 8 random cards face down into to your hand. You fan the packet, they select one, remember it, and return it to the packet. You shuffle the cards and for the first time the cards are turned face up. You state that you will make two piles of 4 cards each. The spectator is instructed not to reveal their card yet, but to silently remember which pile their selected card goes into. Everyone looks at the faces as you count the first 4 cards, and place them face down in a pile to the left. Then repeat with the remaining 4 cards, placing them into a face down pile on the right. Now for the first time they tell you which pile of cards their selection is in. You make a magical gesture, and lo and behold ... the stack where the selected card was originally seen now only has 3 cards, and the other stack has 5. One of which, of course, is the selected card. |
