Daffy, travel expenses do add up. I travel 55 km [about 30 miles, I think] in my vehicle to my regular pitch, then another 55 km to get home again. I charge that to myself as $NZ60 for vehicle expenses [all of them, pro rata] and include the 3/4 hour each way sitting on my backside travelling. Parking fees sometimes are paid, also.
Overall, I break even over a period of a month or two. But it's disappointing at times to come home at the end of a few hours on the street knowing on that day it cost ME to perform on the street. One thing you cant put a price on is the experience for yourself of practicing your skills on the pitch and learning by being there.
The presentation makes the magic.

So a lot of it varies from performer to performer, depending on how far he has to drive, and perhaps other performers even walk from venue to venue.

Permits was something I was wondering about, for sure, but I suppose that's a topic for another thread., What really sparked my curiosity in the first place was a previous thread where a poster had stated that if you plan to busk, plan to be broke for at least FIVE YEARS. I thioughf "Holy cow! For five years your overhead is going to exceed your income? For five years your overhead is going to keep you in the red?" Then naturally my next thought was to wonder what in the world all these expenses could be that would cause you to take five years to finally be in the black. The thinking be hide the 5 year thing is that is how long it take to get use to beign out on the street and get your show clean and up to speed. Its a bit like do anything for a 1000 hours and your be good at it. I do agree with it in part I have always kept a account of my busking and after hitting hard for a few years I noticed I could back more on a bad day then I did on a good day a year ago. Hope this colours in abit.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Surely the real expensive part is the opportunity cost of stopping other forms of income?

If you've got the equipment your expenses should be:
Expendables. Transportation. Food/water. Permits (if needed).

Different jurisdictions (city, county and state) have different laws. In places like New York and some other big cities, you simply go buy a busker's permit. In some cities, you need no permit at all. Some places call for "performer permits" instead of busker permits and some places might require that you have performer insurance as well.
Best defense is calling the center of the jurisdiction (city hall permit place, or county, etc...) and find out what, if any, permits are required for your type of performance. |

I've read some stories on the Internet of real incidents where even if you have one, the police will still harrass you for their own pleasure. (Or is it ego?)
