Greetings to all staff and members of The Magic Café.
I am a 30 year old Illustrator from Wyoming that spent most of his adolescence touring in a punk rock band. Today, I spend most of my time designing art for bands and businesses, and practicing beginner magic tricks with any free time I can find. I originally was drawn to the world of magic from the beautiful art of the promotional posters I would see for famous magicians like Blackstone, Thurston, Carter, Keller, Houdini, and so on. I really love the look, layout, and elegant feel of those old posters, and hope I can eventually design something in a similar style for conjurers of today. I'm interested in gaining insight from other members, improving my magic skills, and seeing all that this site has to offer. I'm very interested in magic theory, art of deception, and what happens in the human brain when presented with a magic trick. I also enjoy the art of crowd control, and people reading. During my days as the lead singer of my punk band, I learned a lot about how to captivate and keep the interest of an audience, what to do if you fall flat on your face, and how to adapt to the ever changing conditions of pulling off an entertaining live performance. Hopefully that experience will help me with my magic. So far I am a novice lock pick, and I have dabbled in coins and cards. I just ordered the first two volumes of Roberto Giobbi's - Card College, and Bobo's - Modern Coin Magic. Everything else I've learned up to this point has mostly been from online sites like YouTube. I really love elegant sleight of hand tricks, close up magic, and good story telling. I'm always open to advice, and ready to learn! I look forward to being an active member of The Magic Café. I like my magic coffee -dark, in an ordinary mug that appears to be empty, with vanishing sugar packets, creamer that pours from a carafe that's suspended in midair, and a spoon that appears to be bending as I stir it all up! Oh, and if the coffee turns into a solid gold coins, that's good too! Cheers, Lance Inkwell

Hey Lance,
It 's funny that many people who get involved in the magical arts also have an affinity for artwork. If the magic bug gets a hold of you LOOK OUT!!! (it's an addiction, in a good way) Welcome... Maybe you can link some of your artwork, we'd love to see it. David Paul

Davidpaul, thank you for the welcome! My guess is that magic and art can both be painstaking crafts that require tons of practice, attention to detail, and can leave people thinking, "How did they do that?" I truly believe, that when done well, magic is art and art is magic. For anybody that would like to see some of my more recent work, please visit www.lanceinkwell.com Thank you.

There is a lot of factors that go into magic other than sleight of hand developing your character story telling psychology and choreography putting it all together I think of it as a one man play where I play the part of the magician usually when someone puts a play on you have the one that writes it one that acts in it and one that puts the music one that choreographs it all many people it takes to put a play on as a magician often we have to do it all ourselves anand wear many hats. That is the hardest concept to get across to those new in magic. When done and done well that is art. Its more than see the cool stuff I can do and you can't. Lets face it some are more creative than others but as for me artwork tells a story and that story might go with a magic effect I am working on. It gets the creative juices going no different than an author writing a book or seeing a good movie.

I was thinking of a piece about 3' x 8' that would be something like a large bumper stick that owners of motor homes could adhere to the upper back of their motor home. When applied, it would look like a rear window in the motor home that followers could see. I'm thinking of an interior view of a motor home with cartoon characters inside. You would see drapes or curtains hanging on either side, a little dog looking out the windows at the cars following, someone up front driving the bus, then something to really catch the viewers eye.... like grandpa sitting on the toilet reading the paper or a buxom beauty getting out of the shower. Something humorous to make a follower smile. I've always wanted to do this but never had the artistic talent to do so. It could even be a marketable product perhaps called, "The Rear Window." San Diego, CA It's a fact! - Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. (This line censored by Dave Scribner because it is in Latin) - What you believe is real, is real! Who was that masked man and what is he all about? - https://www.pinterest.com/garydsalisbury/ |

Yup, those old stone lithographs from Otis, Strobridge, etc. were real art!
I had a beautiful assortment of them, which I finally decided to "share" with others. I took them to the Collectors' "convention" about 20 years ago, and returned with a "mitt" full of Ben Franklin engravings. I'm sure that the posters went home with some very happy collectors! The widow of a dear friend, still has three THURSTON panels in mint condition, hanging on her living room wall. She, too considers them art! Welcome to our motley crew. It's good to have someone who appreciates how art and magic go together! I recall playing Casper,in the mid '80s. On that tour though, I was booked only in elementary schools. You were most likely in high school. Since you are interested in theory, psychology, etc. You might like to read Dariel Fitzkee'a TRILOGY: "Magic By Misdirection", "The Trick Brain", and "Showmanship For Magicians". They're all "OP" (out of print), but can be found. Henning Nelms' "Magic & Showmanship", is also OP, but can be found. (I consider it a college text!) NoFinally, Kenneth Weber's "Maximum Entertainment", which is still in print, is well worth your time. Maskelynne & Devant's "Our Magic" is most likely OP. It's "very dry", but, you would also benefit from reading it. Few magicians realize that magic is about 5% esoteric science principles, 5% perceptual illusions, 5% sleight of hand techniques, and 85% psychology! None of the works mentioned are on dvd,or VHS!

I guess back in the day magicians had to rely on artwork to get the attention of a passerby and convey the mood of there show. Also develop curiosity wow a lot of psychology went into a piece it had to speak on many levels I wonder if they where aware of it at the time before TV radio internet.
