20 years ago I was bitten by the magic bug and it bitten hard! I became consumed with magic, 1st in performing then into collecting. Collecting must be some sort of mental disorder but that is another subject. Over the years, I collected a wonderful array of magic props for close-up and parlor, books, magazines (I even have one of the few complete collections of Genii magazine) and over $10,000 worth of videos (on VHS). I had collected over 300 production VHS tapes on magic before the DVD medium became popular. The tape library I have is absolutely stunning featuring some of the best of the best in Magic over the years. However, VHS tapes are going, going, gone from popularity.
After 10 years of intense addiction, I put my precious possessions into storage hoping to someday dust them off and resume the hobby I loved so much. It appears that day has finally arrived however......... Thus the real reason for my posting..... (the plot thickens!) My question is, "What should I do with my VHS tape magic collection?" I doubt that anyone would want to buy VHS tapes these days even though the material still remains relevant today. To those who have been in this same predicament, "What did you do with your VHS magic tapes?" Thanks for your time and consideration. Gary Salisbury San Diego, CA email: gdis46@gmail.com

Most folks transfer them to DVD and toss the tapes in the trash.

Thank you, Richard. I considered that but was concerned about violating copyright laws. I understand that one can "legally" make an archival copy of copyrighted digital media for one's own use but how do you prove that you are the legal owner of the media? How would you ever sell the legally copied media? Most people would think it was a pirated video.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Welcome to the Café GS, you have found the right place for your re-found passion, and will find many folks (like myself) who are also returning to something they put aside some time ago.
The puzzle of the video license is a tricky topic. The rule of thumb says that "the license travels with the media", meaning that you could make a copy of your videos for personal use BUT you are also supposed to save the big old VHS media, as that media is what holds the license, capiche? For example, I might copy some media to my hard disk for ease of traveling/convenience, but I also maintain an archive of the actual media in my big old storage area. So if I ever need to prove ownership/prove that I have a legal license for the thing, I can go to my archive (alphabetically sorted in boxes) and pull it out. Should I ever sell one of my movies/CDs/DVDs, I simply pull the actual license item(s) (ie, the physical media, disk, tape, whatever) out of my archive and give that to the buyer. Lastly, it is a Big Old Hassle to keep a massive archive of all my media in storage, BUT is the only way I know to easily prove that I have not pirated media should the need arise. It seems like the harder thing to figure out is how to convert a small mountain of VHS tapes to DVD or Bluray media... |

Welcome GS121002,
Wish I had a clue what to do with old VHS. I can't bring myself to destroy them but I won't be converting them either. Good Luck! -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Mary & RookieMage.
I think I will convert the collection to DVD since I have a dual deck (VHS/DVD) recorder and keep the tapes for archival purposes. Then maybe, and just a maybe, to then digitize them into an MP4 format and just keep the collection on my laptop - something that wasn't possible 20 years ago. Now here is an idea...... If anyone has any VHS, I would be glad to convert them to DVD for you at no charge. You just pay the shipping and for the DVD media. My way of getting to watch some new material during the process while doing a service for the magic community. Gary Salisbury San Diego, CA
