Funny that this topic should come up again.. I was just reading it for the THIRD time! HONEST! I'm working on two upcoming performances and, as I said in another post, I'll not design another performance without running it through the 'lens' of this book. It makes you look from the audience's eyes and, more importantly, mind and emotions. If you want to entertain rather than simply perform, this is a "must read."

The topic of “entertaining” came up on another thread here at the Café. The discussion was on what is needed to make an escape act lift from the painfully boring (as some are) or mundane (as many are) to the category of true ENTERTAINMENT!
Steve’s book gives you the stuff you need to take your escape act to that level. Build your act using Steve’s advice, tips, and direction and you will have an act that will sell, be memorable, and most important be entertaining. There is plenty of real world experience and information packed into those pages. Frankly other variety performers can learn a thing or three from Steve’s book.

Harry, I see you'v read it too? Excellent. I haven't seen the finished product, how is it? that's the problem with being the "web master" of peoples sites, they always send you advanced ebooks with no pictures....
But it is a great book! |

Hi Harry and Doctor Zodiac,
Thank you for the kind words. It is very nice when one's efforts meet with approval and praise from those who know that what they are seeing is of use. Regards, Steve Santini P.S. Don't worry Doc, you will end up with one, I promise. Don't expect any pictures though cause there are none. This book is pure text theory. |

Well, actually there is that nice drawing of a milk can escape on the front cover. Tony

Thanks Tony,
But an artist I am not. If there are those who see it (the cover) and feel it is cartoonish looking, that effect was achieved by a combined lack of skill and sheer luck! Cheers, Steve |

Hi,
Yes. It would probably have more artistic merit. Steve |

Well, just finished the first full read through and there will be a few more for certain. This is no work based on theory and conjecture, it is solid factual information.
Some folks would turn up their nose at any book without pictures. Young kids learn everything off DVD like little organ grinder monkeys replicating what they see, banging their cup, and never doing anything that requires real thought. Being a Kenton fan has also taught me to read backwards and forwards and look for the bold and italicized words in sequence, and other next to impossible reading feats. You won't find any of that weird cryptic message stuff here. Its clear and in plain english all of the things you need to know to take a hobby, or strong interest in escapology to a professional level and not make the kinds of mistakes that many performers are making out there, right now. So what do I realy think: Q Can this manuscript help Magicians? A Yes, 85-90% of the information can help either type of performer, either perform better, make more money or both. Q I don't know anything about escapes, can I get it and become the next Houdini? A Nope, there was only one Houdini. This is about you and the relationship with the audience and the buisness end of performance. If you have a strong hobby interest in either magic or escapes and have put together an act of some sort , this information can get you started off on the right foot and give you the direction to go, to become a better than average performer and succeed in getting bookings and generating revenue. Q Will it help me if I already have an act, and have done a couple shows? A Yes, but if you already have a minor performing background, approach it with an open mind so you don't jump ahead "because you know that part" Read the whole thing. there is something for you in every section. High points for me: The full veiw milk can escape and the thought process to go the extra step, Understanding the thinking of the spectators, Using the power of suggestion to change that thinking and (obviously) the 'Pitch'. Also I'm going to stop being an 'escape stuntman' and start looking at props for their entertainment value, and audience effect. Now to wrap this up, I have always been a little bullheaded on things, opting for my own opinion 9 times out of 10. When I first opened this book and skipped around I spotted several things that I immediatly took offense to. (Because my way is better than everyone elses. I thought I already made that clear.) I left it sit for a day or two and then gave it a full read. Well after the read, it became apparent that in the time I have known Steve he has bit his lip and muttered under his breath on many occasions, going out of his way not to make me feel bad. For that I'm thankful. For the truth about performing escapes and facts that I needed to get going in the right direction.....well that's pretty much priceless. What else can I say? Get it, and read it carefully. Hats off to Steve, for bridging a long standing gap in magical knowledge. A job well done. (Notice I never admited to being wrong about anything. The real point I'm making is my first script FELL into the shredder, and I remember it all, so I'm just writing it back down again. that's all. ;-)

Nicely said KSD, I agree with you completely. This book has become an instant classic already. I've already started reading it through for the second time. This is a book that does not need to be read, it needs to be studied. There is so much good information here I know that I will be referring back to it again and again. To anyone who still hasn't picked it up (What are you waiting for?) do whatever you need to to get it. I know it's a little expensive but it is easily worth twice the price, and will help you book many more shows and command a much higher price. I can't say enough good things about this book. I highly recommend it.
Best regards, Tony Parisi |

If you don't book more shows by using "the pitch" than you ever did before, there is more wrong with your thinking than any shrink is going to be able to fix.
It is expensive. Do you want to succeed is a better question. I can tell you that, on the street, doing magic, I flat slayed them. My pitch for money was weak but there were C notes flowing when I wanted to put in the work. It never filled my soul. They were empty dollars. My parlor/party show was garbage, and I knew it, mostly because I didn't have the proper input to make it work. I did feel bad about representing it as a show. I get a feeling of enjoyment with escapes, and I believe that other folks that get the same feeling can use 'Everything' to make a living at it, and a very good living if they are ready to work at it. I can boil it down to this: being able to get by in life doing what you love is more than most people can ask for. I can see that you can do more than get by, if you apply methods that are proven to do so. It is all laid out in "Everything". I will get many more reads from me, that's for sure.

I like pictures. It's hard for me to admit I didn't need any to enjoy this book.
