A few months ago the zipper on my Imakkulate Ring Flight broke. It was bound to happen as I had started using it as my regular everyday key case and the case itself is pretty chintzy. As the reel itself is still in good shape, I've been keeping my eye open for a suitable case replacement, but with no luck so far.
I know a leather worker who can make a custom case for me and that got me to thinking about adding features to the standard ring flight. The only thing that came to my mind was adding a pocket and gimmick for a card-to-wallet type effect, but I'm not sure if this really makes sense for a keychain. Does anyone else have ideas, or has this been done before? Perhaps the ring flight case should be left as a single-purpose item?

Its a great trick but I think its odd just to do one trick. if you look on youtube there are many styles so a card to wallet is a good ideal or like what I'm looking for is a good key routine. Something that's right there that you don't have to keep going to the pocket

Fraser Gould, all you have to do is take the Key case to a leather shoe repair shop, and have them sew a new zipper on the case. They may also be able to duplicate your key case.
Adding anything to a ring flight key case is absurd, you have a gimmicked case, and it should not be out for over exposure to the spectators. If you could find a matching one, that would be a better solution. Also have you given any thought to this, of just throwing out your ideas. A pocket would add bulk to the case. For a card to effect, you have to cut the case up on the outside, and could only do a fold in quarters card. Cutting the case will increase the wear on the leather and make the small case sag. Stiffer leather will create bulk and weight. You friend has a leather sewing machine, interesting. The problem is that many key cases are not available today, do to the very thick car keys. It is also very difficult to find today, for the simple fact, the stores that use to sell these men's leather items are no longer in business. Men's stores no longer carry accessory items like they use to, and the high end knickknack stores only carry china junk. |

Bill, did you mean "or just throwing out your ideas?".
I have given more than a bit of precursory thought to this, yes - and I'm pretty sure my friend could add a card-to-wallet feature without the keychain becoming overly bulky. I'm not sure you understood my initial post, but I wasn't intending to use my old ring case in the construction at all; just remove the reel from it and have a new, quality case made. My question for the community was whether it would make sense to add this feature (or something else) to a keychain. You do make a good point about drawing unwanted attention to the keychain and the risk of exposure. That said, I've never had a spectator ask to examine either my keychain or my wallet when I do either effect. That might change if I was withdrawing a selected card from a keychain instead of a wallet. Key cases are still widely used in Japan, by the way.

If I am not mistaken back in the mid to late 70's someone did put out a Ring Flight/Card in Wallet all in one combo for awhile. I don't remember ever actually seeing one in person but I want too say I did see ads for such an item advertised in Genii.

Perhaps Wayne Fox's safe keeping but with a more reliable lid.

I think ultimately you will be diluting the effect of each revelation by having 2 different items revealed.
