I understand that almost any trick can be used in a tradeshow environment whether it be theatre or aisle as long as it generally has no lengthy set up or can be done in the round, unless angles can be covered. This include lots of traditional standup tricks such as linking rings or chinese sticks as long as you can tie a script with it and deliver the message? So technically a standup magician that has tricks that meet this requirement can also work tradeshows?
Illusions can also be used if above criteria is followed particularly in theater style and combined with platform effects to create your tradeshow act,is this correct? Don |

Yup. Lengthy may not be good, but then again, there are performers who are just so good that they could probably make a lengthy effect work. Remember, at a trade show the people in the aisles have agendas. They are busy and have a lot of ground to cover. If our program gets a little too complicated, or requires effort to follow, they may walk away.
I can't think of any situation where we would have to perform in the round. More likely, we would be at 180 degrees. I don't know how to attach a picture here on the Café, or I would show you. So with angles... even if an effect is angular, one can compensate with body movement. You are correct... as long as you can put a script in you are fine. I can think of several ways to get into a script with both the effects you mention. Illusions - Yes Sir - for sure. Several guys have done illusions: Scott Tokar, Paul Gertner and Giovanni, are three that come to mind, off the top of my head. I remember you said you were primarily a stand-up performer, who recently started doing close-up. Here's the fact. Most close-up guys get to the trade show floor and find out that they have to adapt their show. The crowds get so large that you can't really do 'true' close-up after your initial crowd-building portion. So, as a close-up guy, I had to turn my show into a kind of stand-up show. Again, I wish I knew how to put a picture up here. So, my point is - you will find that even in Aisle view, you will essentially be doing stand-up. By the way - I would sell illusions separate - as a more expensive option for exhibitors who have a lot of floor space. |
