I just read an article about Jon Stewart interviewing Richard Dawkins where he asked, "Do you believe that the end of our civilization will be through religious strife or scientific advancement?”
I thought it an interesting question. So what do you think? |

I'd say yes, probably so.

Science means knowledge and knowledge is dangerous, especially in the hands of religious nuts. My money is on that combination.

I wouldn't listen to anything Dawkin said.

What's scary though is that there have been 5 great extinctions during the history of the planet (none of them caused by religious strife or scientific advancement), so it's completely plausible that it could happen again. Civilization won't end, it will change, adapt. It always has and always will. 50 years from now we will look back and laugh at the dunderheads who are screaming "The sky is falling! Global warming!" When I was a kid they were warning of another ice age. A rogue asteroid. God's wrath. The moon will crash into the Earth. Sunspots. A terrible flood. Locust.
I'm gonna have a cocktail and enjoy a hearty guffaw. |

In the year 5 billion the sun will expand, destroying the earth forever. Don't worry, by then the human race will have migrated to other planets, so nobody will be hurt. In fact it will inspire us to create "New Earth," a planet just like earth only somewhere else. Now if you will excuse me, I just saw a police box appear.

I think the oil is running out and we will all be back to an agricultural system within 40 years and the population we be back to what it was before all this stuff. We will be a lost civilization.

I guess the question should have been, "Do you believe that the end of our civilization will be through religious strife or scientific advancement, or that neither will cause the end of civilization?
Kind of heartening to know that many of you go with the third option. |

I don't understand how science, in and of itself, can lead to the end of human civilization.......
Can anyone explain? Kam
