What did he cover on this lecture? There's no description on the Penguin site and haven't seen any comment here. Just wondering, thanks.

No need to ask. Just buy.

The first trick is the tossed out deck, Dobson style. That alone will help you elevate the impact of EVERY trick you perform.

I second what Jamie says.

What I love about this lecture is Dobson's material is so commercial and very workable. When I am performing close-up, I don't want to worry about an over-abundance of sleight of hand. I love stuff that is easy to perform and creates moments of wonder and amazement. I had heard so much about Wayne's Tossed Out Deck, and it really is a nice solution.

Dobson also performs a one card version of Brainwave, and it was impressive. Not sure I would do this, but it was nice.

Echo was a fabulous card effect that I will use in a show in August. It's sort of a one-deck You Do As I Do, though it is more You Say as I Say (which is where the Echo comes in), with a kicker ending of Card to Impossible Location. Wonderful effect.

Wayne does a two-person mind-reading effect with a lady, and it is a great piece of comedy. It is a dual-reality effect in the sense that the audience is led to believe the assistant has correctly divined a word thought of. Wayne asks a bunch of questions about the word, and the assistant writes down what he believes. As the audience clearly sees the word written, they get a great deal of laughs as Wayne continues to ask questions about the word. At the last moment, the assitant realizes at the end he has the wrong word, he marks it out (though it is still readable), and he writes the new word and gives the lady the word he wrote down. This cancels out the dual-reality, which is not used as a method, but as a tool for raising the entertainment value.

My Lucky Card was absolutely brilliant. It is a three-phase effect. The first two phases are framed as sort of a full deck memorization effect, but it comes across as feeling like an ACAAN effect. The spectator never chooses a card during the first two phases, but the way Wayne presents it, it does feel like he is revealing the spectator's cards. The spectator then picks his lucky card out of the deck, and it matches the card Wayne has had face down, half pulled out of a card envelope. Stunning. I really love this one. If I would have paid $30 for this alone, it would have been worth it.

His Lightning Matrix is nice, and it is probably a version I would actually try. Beautiful handling and nice cover for when you have to do your move.

Coins to the Glass is a nice presentation for a Coins Across routine. I came up with my own version of Coins Across, but I like the addition of the glass. It adds nice visual and aural elements.

Cap and Pence is a nice effect, though not for me.

Point of Departure is a visual card sandwich effect where the selected card vanishes from between two cards and ends up in the deck reversed.

Wayne's next piece was The Sandwich Trick, which is an Ambitious Card type of effect with the chosen and signed card ending up sandwiched between the two cards used in the previous effect.

Not being from the UK, I knew very little about Dobson before this lecture. Most of the material I found to be fairly easy to do and practical. I'm even considering getting his Definitive Collection book (limited release and priced accordingly), but there's very little information about it other than "it contains most of his previously published work". I've seen good reviews of his previous books, but they are mostly scarce- and he mostly seems to have published many smaller books with assorted material. I guess I'm a sucker for these "collection" type of books. Smile

Does anyone have the book, and care to comment? Anyone care to part ways with the book? Smile

It is a brilliant book. If you liked the lecture then you'll know the type of material you'll be buying.

I doubt many people will be willing to sell theirs. I know I wouldn't. You could easily build a career based on the content.

Just watched. Wayne's brilliant. Coins to glass even I can pull off. Cap and pence is very simplified way of doing Ramsay's version.

He's just brilliant.

Just ordered it, Wayne Dobsons stuff is always good and with the health problems he's had he really is an inspiration to us all, well done him.

I have seen about 20 penguin lectures. This lecture ranks up there for me in two aspects. First, it is truly inspiring to see Wayne perform after all he has been through. Seconly, the material was filled with great workable magic!

Do you guys/gals know where to find the cap and pence stuff? I used to have all the parts for the Ramsey routine but sold it all.

It's very good . Have seen all of the effects as I have a lot of Wayne's products but there are additions to some of his routines which are good to know so it's well worth the money. Really good purchase as Wayne is a gem. Lots of very commercial material. He has done the work and routined everything perfectly so all we have to do is perform it and do it justice. Excellent Mr Dobson. You were and are an inspiration. Mike Donoghue Pro. Magician

Just got it, time for a bit of relaxation and a watch. I have the greatest respect for Wayne, I still love his bit with Frank Bruno and Harry Carpenter, years ago but brilliant.

I watched this yesterday and can only agree with so many others: great, doable stuff. Very, very good. I have come to like Dobson´s material more and more. The first time I came in contact with his magic was at FISM 2006 in Stockholm, where I volunteered backstage. In the dealer room I saw Wayne demonstrate some of his effects, one of them was "Lucky dip". Since then I´m a big fan.

In the 1970's the famous magic dealer in England Ken Brooke of Ken Brooke's Magic Place, seen the ability in Wayne Dobson. He and Wayne became good friends, and all those years ago, said, This is a young man to watch, as he has a career in the performance of magic.

That is one heck of a recommendation from Ken Brooke.

It was a fun lecture, I really like Dobson and his ideas. Ok, I knew most of the lecture material before, but I bought it just to see Dobson again and the interview.

Ditto! Late 80's, early 90's, Wayne's "A Kind of Magic" TV series, a host of guest spots on lots of TV shows & I was hooked on magic! One of the best lives performers I've ever had the pleasure to see. A true star of British magic...AND a properly decent guy!
