Hi guys
I'm new to this magic scene. Does anyone know much about the College of Magic? They offer diploma courses in magic via a distance-learning program and I'm very keen to sign up. Anyone done their diploma course? Comments? They seem to be going for the past 20 odd years or so and have support of Siegfried + Roy. Looks very exciting. J>R> |

JR,
I having been in magic for more than 50 years, I have never heard of this outfit before. And I would be more than a little suspicious of any organization where it was so difficult to find out WHO is behind it! In fact, from the website, you can't even find out what country it is located in! My suggestion? Save your money. cheers, Peter Marucci |

They claim to be affiliated with FISM, so why not drop FISM a line? If FISM can't tell you that they are legitimate, then I'd be spending my $350 US on a good set of books and DVDs.
Peter, hidden away at the bottom of one of the pages is their address, but it took some looking to find it. They're in Capetown, South Africa. David |

Thanks all for the comments ...
Peter—I did some more research and your comment regarding "you can't even find out what country it is located in!" is a bit out of line. There's a "contact us" link at the bottom of the page which lists all their contact details including address. Anyway, checked them out, they're legit. S*R in fact have a whole feature on them on their site which is reassuring. I also learned that the ex-Magic Circle (I think it was Magic Circle) president David Berglas is one of their key supporters. I'm going to sign up and will let you know the results. |

What worries me is that they offer to teach everything from close-up to stage in a few lessons. Fifteen lessons if I've read it right! They are going to send a box containing the equipment you will need!
Most of us need a cupboard to hold our stuff and we take years to work on our routines. I have no idea what is involved in the course but usually when things are too good to be true - - -. Eddie |

I emailed them regarding the course content received a quick response. Course One is an introduction to magic. They don't teach *everything* from close-up to stage but introduce the concepts and a few effects from each area.
I will keep you updated on my progress. |

Well, this guy seems determined, so good luck to him. But this organization sounds a lot like that visual arts correspondence course I took when I was a teenager! And I fail to see what having a "diploma" in magic will get you. Tell you what, jross, send me the 350 clams and I'll make up a sweet looking diploma for you and even throw in a free deck of cards!

None of the posters here were obviously at the World Seminar in Vegas in January? At the awards ceremony, Lance Burton spent a good five minutes on the main stage chatting about this college of magic and the good work they've been doing in promoting the art.
Jr, go for the course and let us know what you think. Either the naysayers are right or Siegfried and Roy know something that we don't. Check out their site: http://www.siegfriedandroy.com/magic/college.php |

Hey jross
I checked out the website, it seems OK to me. I have done distance learning (not magic-related) before and it is not too bad. One benefit I see to this course is the opportunity to learn "routining and patter" ideas and the structuring of a show. If I were to spend a large amount of money like this, I think I would purchase Dai Vernons, Revelations from L & L Publishing. There are 16 volumes on eight DVDs I believe. You will learn a lot of material on everything from, coins, cards, cup and balls, etc. But that's just me. I would like to learn the classics from one who performed them before magic started getting too commercialized...Now this is just my opinion and I think this online course seems alright too, it's just the method you choose to learn from. We all learn better in different ways. Anyway, all the best, keep us informed. Bill Thomas |

The College of Magic is in South Africa. I buy quite a few props and books from Fayaad who runs their magic shop. Maybe you should phone Fayaad and ask him what he thinks. If you can actually go there and talk to him, that would be even better.
In December 2003 I went to visit him and in my opinion he is technically one of the best card magicians out there. But be warned, most of the courses is apparatus based, not sleight of hand—this I heard from Fayaad. That said, they still offer great courses to improve showmanship. Fayaad's no. is 021-6830988. Good luck Andre ajcombri@telkomsa.net |

Hi Guys
Thanks for the comments, Bill and Andre. I appreciate the input. Digging deeper into their site (there's a lot of information available) I see a lot of "top magic names" have visited the place...Tommy Wonder, Berglas, Paul Daniels, Tom Ogden...(I've got his Idiots Guide to Magic book and so on). The course starts soon, will keep you informed |

Hi All,
I can only add my support to what Andre has previously said. I have had extensive deaslings with The Magic Shop and Fayaad. Their service is excellent and they have shown the greatest integrity with all their dealings with me. The magic course they offer is legit and well put together |

One more vote for the College...they are legit, I can promise you that (although they take their time responding to e-mails...)
I have been there, it really is a great place. Don't know if that helps. Cheers |

Hi All
Does anybody know anything about the companies that run these courses in the UK? I've received a couple of emails about one course which seems to have links to Paul Daniels ( http://www.magic-course.com ) I'd be particularly interested to get some feedback from anyone who has actually signed up for this. Thanks Bev |

Hi Bev,
Thanks for the question. http://www.magic-course.com details a course which is purported to be based on Paul Daniels' Master Class. The page also links to http://www.pdmasterclass.com/ - which details the Paul Daniels' Master Class. On the other hand, http://www.magic-course.co.uk seems to be placeholder, and does not lead anywhere. Anybody know anything more on this? Is this for real? Nakul Errr... Considering that the BUY link leads to http://www.the-magic-store.com/shop/product.asp?sp=777 which is the Paul Daniels Magic Store... I guess this is for real... :"> |

Hi Nakulshenoy
Thanks for looking into it (I'm not exactly a whizz on the PC so I would never of thought about following the link !) From the emails I've received it seems that you get the first months stuff free, and then if you like what you see you can sign up for the rest. So.. I'm going to have a bash with the first part and take it from there. I'll try and post a review when it arrives. Thanks again Bev |
