Well it will soon be summer show time again and lucky old me has a full season booked.
Among the new ideas for the year I have been booked to do upwards of a dozen escapes for Traction Engine Rallies, they require an escape such as Cruxifix or Mailbag in front of an engine traveling towards me at full speed. So if anyone out there has done this type of thing before *1) How much distance do you give between you and the engine before jumping clear. *2) Do you mark the distance with flags ? *3) Do you get the driver to drive at a regular speed rather than flat out. *4) Can this distance / speed equate so that space could be worked out by computer ? Your thoughts may help and any additional presentation ideas would be great. |

Okay, wait, I can do this. You have a train heading from New York going to Boston averaging 75 MPH. 3 miles down the tracks there's a guy suspended over the tracks trapped in side a mailbag. Now if there's 26 passengers on the train, and the distance to the mail bag=2x+y, and the train departs exactly at 9:45 AM, that means...ah @&*# I never was very good at math...sorry.

Well thanks for all the PM`s quite a few good ideas have come out, see your not a bad lot of buddies are you. Regarding AJP807, Its a Traction engine not a train and if it goes 75 MPH I shall get the hell out of there before it starts. Maybe Mr Blaine could do it in his goldfish bowl!

I'm not familiar with the term 'Traction Engine'. Could you please explain.
Something to consider: ALWAYS have a backup safety plan. Even if you think there's no real risk. it's still a good idea to have one in place. JLareau

I think the term here may be "tractor pull" It may be best to use the old speeding car escape from Abbotts
where you are not close to the impact. Another option would be to do the escape on the front of the moving tractor as it is headed for a wall of foam rubber cubes painted/distressed to look like concrete. As you jump from the tractor it stops short of the cubes and secret.

Yes, I think if the edges fo the cubes were dulled up and they were not stacked very square it would give the illusion they were very heavy and you got the stack as even as you could.

A Traction Engine is a steam powered vehicle used in Agriculture and construction around the turn of end of the 1800's.
Their weight is measured by the ton and their stopping distance can be described as long or even 'monthly'. Steering is via a chain to a solid front axel that is pivoted and it works like the steering on a wooden go kart. They can be best described as four wheeled versions of Steam Rollers. Any escape would have to survive an inspection by the guys that have restored these machines i.e. people that use sledgehammers to get the engine running. Good idea regarding the cubes though. |

A whole summer of jumping out of from in front of trains! Man! Do we live large or what!
**Here is but one tip that may or may not work for you but if the stunt ends up involving an enclosure (that you are in) and the train hitting it, etc....a good $15 investment is an earpiece walkie talkie set from Radio Shack for 1)You 2)the Driver and 3)Your helper who can view the two of you. Never underestimate the power of an objective reality check.
"What's your drug?" she asked. "Hope" he said, "The most addicting one of all."
