I've always perceived "finger flinger" as sort of a backhanded compliment. It acknowledges someone's skill at manipulating cards, but suggests that they put the technique over the effect.
The most stunning examples I've ever seen of finger flinging occurred at the Lee Asher lecture that the Buck twins attended here in SF. Jim |

I don't think there is anything wrong with being called or calling yourself a finger flinger.
So we like to practice a lot of crazy stuff, but that means we just like to practice everything until it is perfect. At least I do. I have never met a finger flinger that really had a show off kind of attitude. Most of the time the guys who had the attitude were the ones who could not do the same stuff the finger flinger is doing. I'm not saying everyone is like that, but it's just been my experience. Two more words. Paul David! if you are in the Los Angeles area EVER!!.. Drop by Universal City Walk and go to Wizards on a Friday or Saturday night and walk into the bar. This guy is freaking awesome... I consider him to be a master finger flinger... and he sure does not put the technique over the effect.. this guy is just freaking GOOD!!!! Don't bother drinking when you come and see him work. You will feel like you are on something anyway. Strong mind bending performances is all I can say. I don't think finger flinger really means anything, it's just something that was made up to diss guys who take time to learn some crazy stuff. Skill is skill and there is no denying that. |

I've never thought of "Finger Flinger" as a negative or insulting term. The magicians that attend the Fechter FINGER FLINGERS Frolic put good magic effects above all. To me, it's just meant a magician that does good sleight of hand, whether its flourishes or not. AND, it doesn't mean that they don't ever use gimmicks. Yes, there are some purists who will only work with straight decks and ungimmicked coins. For me they miss the opportunity to do some powerful techniques. But if that's the way they want it, more power to them.
I am absolutely awed by the skills of Dan and Dave Buck. I know lots of magicians don't like them because their personalities are low key. They've been accused of not being performers. So what. They do what they want, and they can do things that I'd never be able to do in a dozen lifetimes. Think of them as jugglers, if you must, but to me they are Finger Flingers extraordinaire, and I love to watch them work.

I met Don England for the first time through a mutual acquaintance, and he showed me a few card tricks that made my brain fry!

I'm gonna go with Lee Asher... I watched the videos on his website, and after a 7 year hiatus from magic, I picked up my blue backed Bicycles and started on my quest to be a finger flinger... he actually was inspiring enough to make me want to do magic again... thanx Lee!
