Hey everyone, thanks for your help on this one.
I was recently told that Bicycle was no longer going to make trick decks, period. I thought I read a few months back that they were going to quit making MARKED decks due to the casinos' concerns. Anyone have a confirmation on what Bicycle is doing? Thanks! |

Neither of those things sound remotely true.....
1. Casino's use their own decks, they purchase their own back designs with their own logos, so why would they care about marked decks? 2. Weapons from Eric Ross is just now being released.... it's a brand new gaff deck printed from Bicycle link: http://www.murphysmagic.com/Product.aspx?id=53562 3. Magicians make up a good portion of USPCC's customer and creator base (not a huge portion, mind you, but a good portion) and they would be stupid to shoot themselves in the foot by cutting off that support. link: http://www.bicyclecards.com/about/card-magic Hope that answers your question. |

I did get an email from Vanishing Inc. a few months back about marked decks, but didn't save it. Someone at a magic shop told me all decks, but that doesn't sound like its correct, given all you said as well.

You are sort of right. The USPCC decided they won't print any more gaffs using their Rider back design, but they still allow people to make gaffs in Bicycle stock with custom backs. That's why Murphy's now uses Mandolin backs for all their custom gimmicks, and some marked decks use Maiden back design.
Apparently USPCC allowed one more run of the Ultimate Marked Deck in Rider back design, so those are still available until supplies run out. Having said that, there are still supplies of blank faced Rider backs (I'm not sure if they are still being printed, but they are still out there), so a few companies are taking these and printing their custom faces for small batches of cards. |

Again, that USED to be the case, but Bicycle is back to making gaffs and gaff decks in Rider back
Weapons from Eric Ross is just now being released.... it's a brand new gaff deck printed from Bicycle on rider back 808s link: http://www.murphysmagic.com/Product.aspx?id=53562 |

Hmmm, interesting... how come I'm just learning this? Is this a recent change of heart?
Does the USPCC charge any royalties for using their 808 design? I was recently wondering why the blank faced 808 are more expensive than the 809. I've been wanting to try Twilight Angels, hope PH Presents brings back the Rider back design at some points at the current (or lower!) price point. They've been pushing for a transition to the 809, so I'm guessing it might take a while to come back to the 808 if that's the case. |

David, you keep referring to Weapons by Eric Ross. All those effects seem to use gaffs on the FACES of the cards. A few years ago, USPCC stopped allowing gaffs to be made using the BACK of the Rider Back Design. No more printed marked decks like the Boris Wild Marked Deck, and no gaffs that alter the back design of the 808 Rider Back design....like the Twilight Angels.

Last November Ellusionist released their distressed 1800's using the Rider back 808 design
The back design was distressed AND marked My review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0EjeB895FnE Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OiggSfjADjs |

Well, then they changed their position that they laid down a few years ago.

Anyone know the latest on this? Did USPCC decide to change their no-Bicycle back design gaff policy?

It's unlikely they'll go back. It has to do with their copyright design. If they allow people to print marked decks or other gaffs using their proprietary designs, it's not defending their design. Like if Coca Cola allowed local bottlers to add whatever flavors they wanted and still call it Coke.

In another thread someone wrote: "The number of gaffs that are still produced for the 808 Rider Backs satisfies most magicians. Only gaffs that change the artwork of the back design, the ace of spades and the jokers are off-limits. This impacts very few general-use gaffs. Different colors, split faces/backs, blank face/back, double face/back, different indices, etc. are all still being produced."
So aside from specialized cards like Twilight Angels which have gaffed backs and adjust the standard rider back artwork, surely this wouldn't impact most gaff decks would it? Invisible deck, Svengali, and even double-facers/double-backers can all still be made with regular bike backs. I guess they'll make these with the Mandolin backs as well, to promote the Mandolin brand, but there's no reason they can't still make these gaffed decks with with standard Bicycle backs is there? A lot of gaffed cards/decks use regular backs, so as long as the Ace of Spades and Jokers are standard, they are still being made. As mentioned already, Ellusionist is still selling their marked 1800 Vintage Deck, unless that's old stock? But a deck like that would certainly seem to conflict with USPCC's new policy, unless they've reversed their policy? |
