The other problem is this 1% I keep reading about. Think how better off we'd be if they didn't consume 99% of all the food produced each year, occupy 99% of the homes, and occupy 99% of the cars on the road. That is how it works right? It's not a matter of production efficiency at all. It's simple, we'd all get more food, more homes and more cars if we simply flatted the pay scale right? Problem solved, yay!

Judging by the chart, is it safe to conclude that minimum wage earners enjoyed the highest standard of living in 1968?

Now try comparing the change in world population (3.5 billion in 1968 and 7.1 billion in 2013) to land available for agricultural production. Without increases in agricultural productivity our food proportions at each meal in 2013 would only be half of what they ate in 1968. Not exactly an ideal situation to be in. So, are increases in productivity efficiency a good thing or a bad thing? And while we're thinking about it, what is the effect on sustainability and the environment?

How about if people can't make enough money we pass laws keeping them from having kids? That would bring the amount they need to live down considerably. What is living wage in New York vs Rural Missouri? Should a business have to pay the same minimum in both? Why not make minimum wage $75,000 a year? Seems it might be a bit more complex than you think.

What constitutes "productivity"? And if you can quantify it, can we attribute it directly to workers? In my neighborhood we recently moved to a particular kind of trash can that can be automatically raised and dumped into the truck with hydraulics. Now trash collection is far more "productive" (faster with fewer workers) but not because workers are doing a better job.
Instead of raising the wages of a person who now simply sits in a truck instead of lifting tons of trash each morning, perhaps we can cut taxes which helps ALL people live within their means. |

Looking to improve the economy? The following thread regarding NPRs observation on the contrast in the "solutions" that come out of political campaigns versus what they consistenly hear from other experts across the policital spectrum gives us something to think about.

Nursing aides, orderlies and attendants 10. Postsecondary teachers Here's public opinion on the issue: More than 3 out of 5 small business owners support raising the minimum wage. Since the minimum wage rose in 2009, the price of apples went up 16%, bacon 67%, cheddar cheese 21%, coffee 27%, ground beef 39%, and milk 21%. In fact, Seven Nobel Laureates in Economics endorse the higher minimum wage to $10.10 by 2016, saying it does not lead to lower fewer jobs. |
