Some may find the following relevant, some may not. I wrote it for my "Principia Mentalia" about twenty years ago. It was later republished in "The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy.

Thanks, I enjoyed reading that, Mastermindreader. Have identified with this kind of thinking from a very early age.

I disagree with that in real life, but it is a good mindset to be in if you are pretending to read minds. It makes it easier for you to believe, and therefore cause the spectator to believe as well.
Reality is a real killjoy.

So, Bob: how much of this figures into your modus operandi?

Only charlatans want then to believe.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

In it does, however, summarize the beliefs that I hold. It's basically a combination of basic Buddhism, the books of Joseph Campbell, and the observations of Robert Anton Wilson, which inspired it. The interesting thing is that some skeptics as well as Christian fundamentalists disagree with it. They both hold to the illusion of separateness which is, in fact, an essential component of most forms of Christianity that teach of man's separation from God. Many esoteric Christians, on the other hand, would simply see it as consistent with the idea that we are ALL sons of God. There is an old Asian creation myth in which it is said that in the beginning, God created the universe simply out of loneliness. He divided himself up into everything that exists. It was simply a game in which the object was for each separate part to remember where it came from and who it was. Thus, the interpretion of "atonement"- which implies separation - is recast as "at-ONE-ment," which says the opposite. |

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

Based on that I would say you are one of the thickest.

There, there, tommy... You know I meant that as a compliment. You know, one charlatan to another.

That was a nice concise explanation of concepts and philosophies that I have come across before.

Starrpower- Like I said, it was all inspired by Buddism, the writings of Robert Anton Wilson and Joseph Campbell as well as esoteric Christianity. I wrote it as an example of a premise, or back story, that would be useful to mentalists. And if you read it closely, you'll find a few of my own ideas and interpretations in there as well.
That said, it's really the only particular "religious" doctrine that I hold to that is consistent with my basic Deism. |

Its a good piece. Not being a mentalist, will and audience sit through that long of an explanation? Or is this more of a foundation that you can pick-and-choose how much you care to use at any given time?

I never say or explain any of that in my show. As a back story and premise, it merely motivates my presentation and, occasionally, it is usefulwhen someone starts asking me about mind reading after the show is over when I'm trying to enjoy a drink at the bar. Sometimes they really get into it and start buying the drinks.

This "web connectivity" also ties in with the scientific law of cause and effect. Or karma, as some eastern philosophies would call it. Or from a Christian belief standpoint, reaping as you sow.

A good example of the interconnectedness of all things is demonstrated by the role of bees and the effect their extinction would have on the foods we eat and the lives we live. Interconnectedness is far more than just a metaphysical construct. To one extent or another, everything seems to have a symbiotic relationship.
