Bicycle® Vincent's Royals Playing Cards by Collectable Playing Cards

Image

One of the most famous artists in the world gave us his art to admire and to inspire thousands of artists to come. He is....Vincent.

ABOUT THIS PROJECT...

Vincent's Royals is a hand painted2 deck of playing cards by Jonny Whaam.

The portraits of common people Vincent painted tell us a fascinating story about his life and his art. Simple folks, ordinary people, peasants he met, those are the subjects of his paintings. They were a part of his life, a tragic life that ended when he was only 37 and by his own hand. He sold only one painting during his life...today, his paintings are worth millions.

This deck of playing cards contains 12 important, carefully chosen portraits reinterpreted, painted by Johnny plus two (2) sunflower paintings as the Jokers.

These are the Vincent Royals...

King of Hearts: Vincent Van Gogh

Self portrait with straw hat. Vincent painted over 30 self portraits. As he said; "Bought a good mirror for such purposes". He was often his own model when he couldn't afford to pay someone to pose. This one I like the most.

Queen of Hearts: Anna Carbentus Van Gogh

Vincent's mother. An amateur artist herself, opened the door to Vincent's love for art. I painted a little sunflower in her hand, poetic detail as sunflowers make such a important subject in his work.

Jack of Hearts: The smoker peasant

King of Clubs: Dr. Paul Gachet

Treated Vincent in the last weeks of his life. A famous portrait, although in the original painting Gachet is leaning on the other side. I had to flip and paint him this way to make it work for the pip.

Queen of Clubs: Madame Roulin

Wife of Joseph, Roulin family. If you were wondering what she is holding in her hand (first time I saw the painting I couldn't figure it out, what's that rope for?) Rocking the cradle a lullaby, that's what she's doing.

Jack of Clubs: Armand Roulin

Son of Joseph, Roulin family.

King of Diamonds: Patience Escalier

A peasant. One of the few court cards where I painted the hands in the same position as they appear on the original painting. The old man leaning on his walking cane.

Queen of Diamonds: Agostina Segatori

Woman in the Café Tambourin...an artist's model (for various painters), later the owner of the Café where Vincent payed for his meals with paintings. She went bankrupt and the creditors then proceeded to sell his paintings for canvas and frame prices in batches of 10 just to get rid of them.

Jack of Diamonds: Paul-Eugene Miliet

2nd Lieutenant of the Zouaves, French light infantry, became a friend of Vincent.

King of Spades: postman Joseph Roulin

Vincent painted portraits of the entire Roulin family (Mom, dad and their 3 children). I painted and added a letter in the postman's hand.

Queen of Spades: Madame Trabuc

Wife of an attendant at Saint-Paul Hospital.

Jack of Spades: A young peasant

In the original painting there is no pitch fork on this guy's shoulder. Just another intervention, added by artist Johnny.

The Starry Night

This is one of the most famous paintings in the world. Stars dancing in the night sky, that's what I call it. It seems that Vincent was not satisfied with what he had painted here. They say he thought this painting was a failure. 100 + years and counting, the world has said it differently though - It is called a masterpiece. There could not have been a better theme to use as inspiration to create a perfect back design for the Vincent's Royals Deck.

RISKS AND CHALLENGES

The Bicycle® Vincent's Royals Deck has already been approved by USPCC for printing. If funded, we expect to receive the decks around September 2015 and immediately begin shipping to all our backers. We do not anticipate and challenges with this project.

How do we print and ship out rewards so quickly? We have a close relationship with USPCC. They are able to print our designs quickly and we have a state of the art fulfillment center to quickly ship out our backer rewards. With out you, our backers, we could not make this happen. A BIG thank you to Kickstarter and most importantly all of you!
