I'm thinking of getting into ring magic, and I was wondering what would be a good resource for a beginner such as I. Any good books or DVDs out there? Which do you recommend?

Sorry, should have specified. I am interested in ring and rope and such, but I was talking about finger rings here.

There's a very good L&L DVD on finger ring magic. It includes Mark Leveridge's Ring & String routine, also available separately from him in booklet form.
Hugard's "Modern Magic Manual" (a book that I keep plugging) has a chapter on finger rings, including several variations of Ring on Stick. I've used his no-duplicate version for many years, even completely impromptu with a pencil. Barry |

Get this booklet, the best of the best, great to start with before buying individual tricks.
Jay's Jinking Rings is with finger rings. http://www.magicinc.net/jaysjinkingringsbook.aspx Another good book is Magic with Finger Rings by Jerry Mentzer. http://www.magicmethodsonline.com/wp/wpc......mentzer/ This stuff I so good, it has not been put on DVD, to keep it from the general public. |

For ring and rope check out David Williamson's routine.
Somebody's "Ring and String" for finger ring and shoelace routine is really great. Just forgot the guy's name.

Adopting the terms Scott G put forth some time ago
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......&forum=4 Ring and (finger) ring vs. (harness) ring and rope My previous recommendations were based upon seeing Bin's expressed interest in "ring and rope", but I missed that he subsequently said that this thread was for ring and string. So, let me revise my recommendation. Greg Wilson's RING LEADER is a very thorough compilation of finger ring and string moves, and includes at least one full routine John

I feel a little stupid about the lack of clarity. My bad there.
I'm actually a little more drawn to finger ring tricks that do not requires string, although I'll take 'em all. (I like the coin magic like aesthetic of the former.)

A good starting point indeed.
Here are some other things done with a ring that I enjoy and use quite a bit: Garrett Thomas' The Ring Thing http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/1394 Garret Thomas Banded: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/2406 Justin Millers Divorce routine. Which by the way includes a variation of the Ring Thing in one of the phases. http://www.ellusionist.com/divorce-ring-......ler.html Also, and this is is a very tough thing to master but Zach Heaths Circuit is awesome. The ring visually jumps from finger to finger. Knacky and tough at first but now that Ive got it down, I do it all the time. I actually now do the Circuit effect with the Banded ring mentioned above...so its basically two tricks in one now. https://store.theory11.com/products/circuit-by-zach-heath And for rings to impossible location, I love me a good ring flight. Here is arguably the top of the line item in ring flights (different variations available for keys/brands) http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4183 Here's one that's more reasonable and does the job admirably: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/4269 Also, the regal chain is fantastic for a ring to necklace effect. He also teaches some basic moves on the instruction. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S13453 Anyway, the above are just the ones I have and enjoy. And sounds like you are taking the right first steps with the instructional DVD you mentioned. |

For ring and string routines I would suggest Gregory Wilson's routine "Ring Leader", as well as Diamond Jim Tyler's Ring and String routine.
Both teach great foundational moves as well as solid routines. Following a ring and string routine, I often use Gregory Wilson's product "Bandwidth" (sold at Murphy's Magic), where you appear to dramatically stretch and squeeze a borrowed ring. It is a great visual kicker to any ring routine, in my opinion. |

In answer to "where to start?" and before buying and book or DVD
1) find a ring that appeal to you -- either fits you or your character. 2) handle the ring constantly for several days and become completely familiar with its size, weight and feel in various positions. 3) practice tossing the ring from hand to hand until you can do so without looking from any starting position. 4) since all sleight will want to "appear natural" - learn what is natural for you

If you want to learn all the standard moves from the past combined into an entertaining routine, I suggest you get the great deal. Limited quantities as this is old stock from the Hank Lee inventory.
The Relentless Ring and String routine (book) by Bob Miller, an excellent routine that will give you enough entertaining magic to satisfy your spectators. No gimmicks all sleight of hand and not hard to learn. http://www.tricksupply.com/product-p/relentbook.htm At only $9.99 it is a steal, this was put out before the DVD that followed several years later. Very well explained with ling drawing thought-out. |
