After a frustrating 12 1/2 weeks or so, a severe sprain is taking its time healing. I have been out of work this whole time. The Lord has met our needs completely. After a frustrating discussion with the doc about the MRI, it looks like I will have to find a new job (I was working construction) that will be easier on my ankle. Perhaps this means going back into the magic business (only temporarily).
With that in mind, funds are extremely low. After getting out of the closeup biz, I sold a lot of things. However, if this is the way the Lord is leading, I could use some advice as to wise investments to get myself up and going again. Perhaps some video suggestions or books, maybe even some routine ideas at least to get my mind rolling in this direction again would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, guys. FC |

Sorry to hear about your misfortune and hope you mend completely, and soon.
The best thing to do is to look back at what you used to do, especially the effects that brought the biggest responses, and start there. Re-stock anything in that group of tricks that you might have sold off. You will be on familiar ground and your time to get back into the swing of things will be shorter. Then, look at your library. Go back and leaf through any of your old magic books or magazines and read the descriptions of the tricks as though you knew nothing about them - a layperson's eye view. Then select some of those tricks to add to your act. I am assuming close up or after dinner work, so props may well not be a major deal there. Some rope, some sponge balls, maybe a Benson Bowl routine and some coins and you are on your way. Best of luck with the mend and the job change! Also, if your Doc said you can no longer work construction, you may well qualify for disability benefits. Look into that, for certain! Kind regards, Lee Darrow, C.Ht. http://www.leedarrow.com

Penguin sells a DVD called 'On The Spot' by Gregory Wilson
http://www.penguinmagic.com/product.php?ID=466 It full of strong impromptu effects. This may be a way to get started on a shoe-string. Although you still have to put out the cash for the DVD. Can you claim against your employers for the injury? Take care and good luck. |

I had a similar prblem last year, my hand went through a window cutting 7 tendons and an artery I could not perform though and had to rely on mentalism and Rene Lavand magic. Are you asking for magic that does not really require much use of your hands or just magic in general?

I am sorry to hear about your luck. I hope things turn around for you. I now have lots of videos and was wondering what kind of magic you enjoy doing and an idea of some of the things you have. The more knowledgeable we are about you and your magic the easier it is to help you out.
The last thing you ever expected, should have been the first.

Ok, I began making a list of what I have and realize I do have a good place to start.
Videos: Palms of Steel 1-3, Gary Kurtz Creating Magic & Let's Get Flurious, Michael Close's Workers (video not ultimate dvds), David Stone's Coin Magic Volume 2, 5 Minutes with a Pocket Handkerchief, Carl Cloutier's Topit Video, Extreme Dean Vol. 2 - I think that's it for close up videos. It is a good start. I do have a nice set of Mogar's knives, c/s/b coin set, hopping half, sponge balls, ropes, etc. Most of my books are stand up manipulation books. Perhaps you all could suggest some must have books and one must have video. Honestly, just writing things down is getting my mind going. Thanks for the help so far. FC |

Books:
I would highly suggest Magic Menu Year 1-5 or 6-10. Full of restaurant and bar type magic along with reviews, tips, and stories from the big named workers in that line. Videos: I would suggest any of the Doc Eason Bar Magic Videos, or any of the Aldo Colombini's Lasting Impressions Videos, or any of the Johnny Thompson's Commercial Classics of Magic Videos. Also Peter Marucci and Scott Guinn (board members here on the Café) have lecture notes and DVD's that will suit you well. Hope this helps. Doug Byrd

Since you mentioned your ankle being bad, I don't imagine that you have a problem with your hands. It all depends on your skill level. But if you're good with a deck of cards you can get quite a bit of money from just a deck. I do strolling magic for a pretty penny and only carry around a deck of cards, a ball point pen for a couple routines, and some rubberbands. I have other effects on my person sometimes but I rarely use them.
I would buy Michael Ammar's easy to master card miracles (vol.2 is my favorite but the first three are all good - after that it gets a little iffy)....if you perform all the tricks on the video or DVD you will be set with a forty five minute close-up show using a deck of cards and a hec of a lot of showmanship. Best of luck to you. Also, check out some book from your local library...sometimes the library will have a tarbell or something like paper effects in there and those tricks are so old no one (not even most magicians) know how all of them are done and you can usually make them for pennies. |
