Hey Everyone.
My names is Jon, I am a college student in Columbus Ohio and I have been practicing magic for several years. I joined the Café in hopes of seeking out advice from those who have been at this for a bit longer than me. I've been reading Royal Road and I have a pretty wide collection of DVDs. I would really like to break out and begin to perform at parties and such. Any advice would be appreciated. I'm really looking forward to learning from all of you. -Jon |

Welcome jsatt129,
Focus on about three things in turn and you should make good progress. Remember, if you are nice, the spectators really want you to succeed! It is more fun for everyone if you do well so, if you have done your preparation, all their energy is behind you. Good Luck (and hard work)! -Mary Mowder |

OK...Here's some advice! >>>READ!<<< If you're serious, forget about spending fifty bucks on a "new" card trick. (Most of them are just "recycled" material from Hugard's "Royal Road...", or,TARBELL!!! TARBELL (first written in the late '20s) will help you learn PRINCIPLES. TARBELL IS AN INVESTMENT! (Investments pay dividends.) There are EIGHT VOLUMES. ($20/volume) That's cheap. You can buy one volume at a time. There is even available a pdf of the ORIGINAL COURSE: FREE. The "updated" current edition just contains some additional material. I read TARBELL in the '40s. No. I STUDIED TARBELL in the '40s. I started performing for $$$ at 13. For about 20 years, I was a part time professional. Then I became a full time professional. Now, I'm 83. A major part of my show comes from TARBELL. If finances are a bit "tight", you can buy MARK WILSON'S "COMPLETE COURSE IN MAGIC" (about $10.) It's NOT, "COMPLETE"! But, most of it "came from TARBELL". I knew TARBELL. I know, slightly, Wilson, I knew Walter Gibson, who "ghosted" the Wilson book. Neither i, nor TARBELL, nor Wilson (actually Gibson)l can teach you ANYTHING! "We" can only HELP YOU LEARN!

Jsatt129,
Your post is kind vague, but here is my advice. If you go though Royal Road chapter by chapter, you should note, it is like a course. Starting with basic card handling, and progressing along the way. Each Chapter give you several tricks. As you get farther into the book, the tricks use moves from the previous chapters. The final chapters have full blown compete routines. These have stood the test of time, and are the very best card routines. Pick out about 6 and learn them so you can do them without thinking about what to do next. They even give you suggested patter (what to say) during the routines. Now do the same with your other DVDs and information you have. So now you are loaded with 12 tricks you can do in your sleep, and all set to go. I cannot tell you how to get invited to parties, except to get out and meet people you want to mingle with or if getting paid, work for. There is an old saying for Salesman, "You have to Circulate - to Percolate", meaning get out and the more people you meet the better chances you will have at getting known and knowing people. Let them know that you do magic, have one or two tricks with you, so you can demonstrate your skill and abilities. None of these should be from your 12 tricks you have set for the parties you attend. You have to go where the type of audience you desire to work for are hanging out. If you have to join a club or organization to meet them, then join and get to know the other members. I wish you success in your adventure. |

Thanks for the advice. At the moment I have picked up the first of the Tarbell course as well as Wilsons course (luckily I found it at a used book store for about 4 dollars). So far they have been really helpful. Thanks again for the advice!
