I never can find the end of that little red band to open a new deck. How do you do it? Use a knife?
Do you then remove the cellophane, or leave it on? Why? Thanks. Phil |

I use a cigarette lighter and start melting the plastic and it makes a hole big enough to shove in your pinky or middle finger and rip that bad boy open.

I try and keep the larger portion of the cellophane on. That way it protects the box and it allows me to keep a couple of gaff cards in there. With the back facing out it matches the pattern on the box.

Swiss Army Knife. One slice through the sticker which in the old days was a revenue stamp.

Find the side with the edges folded over by the red band. Grab one of the folds and pull. 9 times out of 10 the cellophane rips right along the red pull thing (which I can never grab either) or at least enough to open.

There is a gag I used at the Texas Renaissance Festival for a long time. I would get a kid up on stage with me to do the card on the forehead routine. After I explained the premise of the piece, I would bring out a brand new deck of playing cards, whisk the cellophane wrapper off of them, and say, "One can easily judge the skill of a card manipulator by the way he opens a pack of cards." And I would begin to have trouble breaking the seal. Then I would tear the case completely to shreds taking it off the deck. I would give the case to the kid and tell him to put it in his pocket. I would also remove the game cards and the jokers, which I would also give to the kid. Then I would shuffle the cards.
I would say, "What did you want, a one-handed shuffle? You jest! From an old man like me, this early in the morning? All right then." And I would do the one-handed riffle shuffle, followed by springing the cards. It made for a very good sequence.

Dick Koornwinder (of the Kar fame) had a great gag using a "key" from a sardine can. He used it to "roll open" the case. Kind of fishy, but hilarious.

I'd love to see your act someday Bill, sounds funny!
How about just setting the deck on table, and slowly the deck begins to unwrap itself (burlesque striptease music could be appropriate here), it breaks its own seal, and the cards slide out of the box. And the magician never touches the deck the entire time. |

This is my favorite way and this should leave the cellophane intact find the little pulltab on the red band and take it off this will unwrap the flap and seal which is all you need to get a clean sealbreak squeze the sides of the box this will leave a little gap insert your thumb into one side when that breaks do the same with the other. By leaving the cellophane on yo can store your jokers on the front of the box.

I just use my fingernails. No they are not long. Just dig your nail under the fold of cellophane and you can open it in about 5-10 seconds.

Fingernails, bad language, and a knife. I like to leave the celophane on, there are a few nice routines in an old Cervon book that make use of it. It also keeps the card case from getting too scruffy.

Sounds as though us card magicians have quite a problem here. Maybe we should all migrate to the coin department, you don't have to take a celophane cover on them! Has anyone thoughout of writing to the US playing card company about this difficult topic?

My English is not good enough, so I do not quite understand those priceless information mean...
Is it really a lot of knowledge to open a deck of Bikes? I really do not know. For my case, I will use my cutter to cut the little red strip and put the larger portion of transparent plastic 2/3 away from the case, then use my Zippo to heat up the sticker, it works every time and my deck are pleased with that. That is my every time I open a new deck and perform, my audience always have positive reaction.

Fingernails for the cellophane, exacto knife on the sticker. I make sure I peel the sticker away from the half-moon so it doesn't make the cards sticky.
I'll soon be ending all of my posts with "nuff said."

I use the McComb method for opening published in either a Genii or Magic mags a number of years ago. I was unaware of the early work being done on this. Perhaps this could be a case (pardon the pun) of independent thinking!?!?!
On a slightly (again sorry) more serious note Sal Piacente showed me the method some dealers use. Remove the cellophane by your favorite method. Run your thumb over the seal to stick it securely to the box. With the flap side up strike the top inch or less of the pack on the edge of a table. With enough force this rips the seal and opens the pack. Interesting technique as well as getting a bit of frushtration out. Cheers, Jason |

I am just interesting to know why so many people care about such this trivial thing as opening a deck of cards. I think that we have been hearing every method apart from using the little red tag, it is not that hard to do, why is people overcomplicating matter.

I use a #10 scalpel blade and standard handle occasionally dabbing adhesive remover on with a cotton swab as I surgically remove the cellophane and the sticker. That way I can gaff the deck as I please (color changing decks this way are knockouts!) then reassemble the wrapper and sticker so it looks absolutely untouched! A slight case of OCD helps with this method.
